And... boom

Yesterday was one of those days when the Universe wraps itself around my head and humps my skull just to show its dominance. Sort of like the times Coco climbs on top of Chuck's backside and moves her lady parts in and out, in and out, as if that would even work if things were functioning, and Chuck just stands there and lets her do it, sometimes glancing over at me as if to say, she thinks I'm buying this. She really thinks this is intimidating, and we both know that all this means is she is a total fucking nutjob.

Except, I believe the Universe very much when it tells me it is in charge. And a lot of what happened and then continued to happen yesterday falls squarely into the bag of things I will not write about on this website. And that bag is labeled PRESERVING MY RELATIONSHIP WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

I think things were made worse by my mood, one of wanting to walk around shooting randomly at things that could splatter or at least topple over in a magnificent way, and I don't even believe in the right to own a gun. In the last few days I have received innumerable requests to weigh in on what is currently going on with the circus that is the Republican National Convention, and I call it a circus because I'm trying to be nice. You have to understand that my family reads this website, and in order for us to have a working relationship I have to be careful when I write about certain things. But my blood pressure is such that if I don't say a few things about this then my head may just explode, and then it'd be all their fault. And they'd go to jail. So this is how I'm rationalizing what I am about to write.

I am angry. I am infuriated. And I don't think I would be if Sarah Palin were a qualified or competent choice as McCain's running mate. But the fact, the reality is that she is not. And instead of demanding better from their party, instead of going, wait a minute, no, we deserve better than this, many Republicans are contorting themselves into a denial of reality. (please read this, it's a report from the AP, not some spooky liberal blog that wants to kill babies) And that right there is what has been going on for the last eight years.

And I am just so damn sick of it.

Any time I engage with one of my conservative friends or family members, or sometimes the conservative commenters on this website, it usually devolves into them screaming about WELFARE! and TAXES! and THE GOVERNMENT IS TAKING MY MONEY AND GIVING IT TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T WORK! And what they don't understand is that this is not the issue at all. What I and many of my more liberal friends want is to HELP people, not give them a free ride, but also not to ignore those who would benefit from us tossing them a life jacket.

Case in point: Because Leta was diagnosed with plagiocephaly when she was two months old, she cannot qualify for private insurance until she is thirteen years old. So the only insurance we can get her is high-risk insurance that costs us upwards of $300 a month. Just for her alone. And even then that insurance won't cover anything until she has reached a $3000 deductible. I am fortunate enough to have grown up in a white, middle class family who could afford to send me to college, as did my husband, and we have enough work experience to run a business that makes it so that we can afford this insurance for our daughter. We don't have to make the choice between buying food or insuring our daughter. We are really fucking lucky.

But what about the family who cannot afford that insurance for their child? The family who can barely make rent, and if they stretch the budget they can eat three meals a day all week, let's hope nothing bad happens to their kids because then they're screwed. Kids, go hug your father, he's off to one of his three jobs, none of which provide him insurance. And it's not because he's lazy or unwilling to work, it's that his family couldn't afford to send him to college, or he came from a family that didn't know they should encourage him to go to college because they were busy trying to survive. If giving up more of my paycheck could help get this family adequate healthcare, then PLEASE. TAKE MY FUCKING MONEY.

I get the feeling that people around the world are looking at this election as a gauge to see if America is finally ready to wake up and realize that we are not the only country on this planet. They are waiting to see if we are going to put yet another fundamentalist loon in charge of public and foreign policy, someone who doesn't think that global warming is in any way caused by humans, so screw the rest of you who live here on this planet, we need that cup of oil with breakfast in the morning.

To my readers who do not live in America, who are not American, please know that there are so many of us here who are disgusted with what we have let happen in the last eight years and are doing everything we can to ensure that it stops. We are just as scared as you are of those around us who have their fingers in their ears and are going LA LA LA LA LA in an attempt to convince themselves that their behavior and their policies are not in direct violation of the teachings of the God they think put them in power.

#309, are you serious? I mean, really, I'm not being sarcastic - were you being serious when you referred to Barack Obama as a Muslim? He grew up with a default non-religious household (non-practicing Christian mom and non-practicing Muslim dad, then an areligious step-dad), and became a Christian over 20 years ago. My grandfather's wife has said something to the "He's really a Muslim" effect and it never ceases to drop my jaw alllll the way down to the floor. Again, just, WOW. (Oh, and "Ali" is short for "Alison." I'm not some scary boogeyman Muslim plant oooo! Muslims! scary! aiieee!)

#889, right on. I'm sad to see so many comments saying, "I'm out of here, Heather!" because they don't like what's in this post. Isn't the whole point of having a blog (famous or not) that it's YOUR viewpoint? YOUR writing? This isn't exactly a one-topic website. I don't come here often because only some of the posts really pique my interest. On the flip side, you're really going to leave because of ONE day's writing? Well, I guess WaltzInExile is correct: That's your right!

Hmmm...I'm intelligent, caring, wonderful, generous, educated, worldly and you're a dumbass who can't understand my nuanced arguments.

Great way to win people over to your way of thinking.

This post is exactly why conservatives, like me, don't listen to what you have to say. Liberals, ironically, hew much more strongly to ideology than any conservative I know. I say it's ironic because I'M supposed to be the mouth-breathing, closed minded, bigot who hates trees, poor people, minorities, women, and clouds. There is ZERO tolerance on the left for ANY dissent from the party line...just ask the graveyard of Hillary supporters that have been banned from Kos over their failure to recognize the inevitability of the One.

I, too, would like to see poor people (and not just black poor people...little betrayal of your condescension toward blacks there, Heather?) have access to health care and good schools. That's why I support privatization of medicine and school choice. The government will only screw it up, as it as since 1776. Unlike you, I don't make 40-50K a month, so I like to be a little smarter about tax policy.

Anyway...keep preaching the hate and intolerance of any idea other than your own. It's sure to make me wake up one day and have a "eureka!" moment and start thinking you're right.

I have had the same headache for the better part of the week because of McCain/Palin. Now, while I really don't care about her daughter being pregnant, I DO care that Palin states that we should leave Bristol alone BECAUSE this "choice" is a private family matter. Yep. It is. So are my, and other women's, reproductive rights. It's a "choice" that is my private business.

So yes. I agree, and hopefully by the beginning of November this headache will be gone.

    I have faith.

I really enjoyed your post, and I also agree with you to a certain extent.

My family is a military family, and if you know anything about the military, then you've heard about TriCare. It is socialized medicine My husband also has a premium taken out of his paycheck every month to cover him and our family. So no, it's not free.

Personally, I hate it. I hate the fact that it takes upwards of 2-3 weeks to get an appointment at any given time. There's hundreds of doctors in the military hospitals, it's just nearly impossible to get into see them. And you never, ever see the same one twice. If you want continuity of care, then you have to be willing to wait. I won't get into on here, because I am sure someone will tell me I am wrong, but I personally wouldn't wish socialized health care on anyone. There's nothing wrong with Medicare, but it is extremely flawed, and corrupt. The people who need it don't qualify, and those who abuse continue to stay covered on it.

I have also worked in the health care field for many years, and I can tell you first hand that our current system is totally flawed. People who don't have insurance treat the emergency rooms like a family practice clinic. Which is NOT what the ER was intended for. I think instead of forcing everyone to go with socialized medicine, there needs to be a huge health care reform, but not by socializing it.

I had just a big a problem looking at all those Democrats who had their eyes glazed over while drooling at the feet of Obama. They are no better than the Republicans, and I have a problem with people acting like the RNC is any different from the DNC.

The fact of the matter is that the two candidates are going to tell you exactly what you want to hear to get into office. That's what politicians do. It's what they do IN office that matters. Whose to say that once in office, Obama won't say, well uh you see uh, I think the health care is just uh fine and dandy. Uh, we're gonna keep it, uh the same.

And Obama is also a very good teleprompter reader. he doesn't um and uh as much.

I am all for some kind of national health care coverage for kids. I will say that I think that would be a wonderful thing, especially for families with little to no monthly income. We should protect those who can't protect themselves. But I do not agree with socializing healthcare.

I also find it insulting to read comments from people who don't live in the US who lump us all together as gun totin', moose huntin' beer drinkers. That's ignorant, and slightly racist. I think people in Australia wouldn't appreciate it if someone in the US lumped them all together calling them kangaroo shootin, koala lovin' drunks.

The amount of times last night that Palin made a snarky, sarcastic comment and the crowd went crazy made me physically sick. Her and Rudy both, denegrating community organization as if it's nothing at all, laughing like a couple of "mean girls" over what is very valuable work... I don't understand how anyone could even LIKE these people much less want them leading the country.

Does it strike anyone in the Republican party that their people ARE comparing Palin to Obama, proving that even THEY seem to think that McCain is going to croak before it's all said and done?

I am so upset and flustered over this whole thing that I can't even articulate with any seblance of intelligence. I just don't get it.

And did anyone else see the people wearing the "Hoosiers for the Hottie" button? And Liberals are sexist??? Really?? I mean... REALLY???

GREAT post! I had a really big wake up call about healthcare recently. I had to take a trip to the ER last month. After receiving the insurance statement showing me how much it would've cost me without insurance, I am ever so thankful to have that luxury. I have to pay around $200, but the entire bill is for over $9,000! I was lucky enough not to have to make the choice between my health and money, but sadly many people have to choose not to take care of themselves because of the cost. I'm with you, PLEASE take more of my money if it will help people have something every human being deserves not to have to worry about.

So true! I think about this very thing all the time. Why do all the "Christians" I know, belong to a political party that stands for the polar opposite of what it means to behave like a Christian?

I so appreciated how Obama described the Republican way of thinking, “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps, even if you don’t have boots. You’re on your own.” I'm sure Jesus would be so very proud.

If we are so freaking stupid so as to cheer when they bash Obama for bringing "European values" from Germany, to mock our wanting to make sure that everyone who is detained by the U.S. is advised of their constitutional rights, before they're, you know, tortured, then maybe we do deserve this self-destruction that the Republicans want to continue.

The saddest part is that we don't have a true third choice. I am all for getting back to the country this used to be,the one it started as, the one where both the people and the politicians actually lived by the constitution.

God should not come up in politics. Ever. After all, your god and my god my be very different gods with very different moral codes.

Helping people is both noble and necessary but thru force of charity, there is no charity, as 805 said. If we didn't have federal taxation people would have more money to feed and shelter their families without the government help. There would also be community programs for support when needed. There would be a saturation of private schools with better payed teachers and higher standards, people would be able to afford this because taxs would be lower and it would give people options. Free healthcare means a lesser quality of healthcare for the general public and insane rates for the few who can keep private healthcare.

McCain choosing Sarah Palin as his VP is a very cynical and probably desperate move. I had some regard for McCain, but ever since he became the presumptive Republican Presidential candidate, he has done and said things that contradict his so called maverick status. Maverick my ass - he's just another fear mongering, stuck in the past, comb-over conservative man, dancing to the tune of the good ol' boys minding their own wallets, not giving a toss about people outside their realm.

I sincerely hope Obama and Biden will have the power and panache to make Americans aware how dishonest, hypocritical, and hollow the Republican ticket has become.

I'm however very afraid many voters will fall in love with the ho hum good looks and one-dimensional message Sarah Palin offers.

I tried to explain this very same principle, of wanting to help people who need it, to a friend last night who is a republican. So when I gave him our deep, true reasons for voting democrat, because we live a fine life, and if my money can go to help people, TAKE IT, it was like he couldn't comprehend it. Like that didn't make sense. Like making money and not using any of it to do anything for anyone but yourself was this alien concept. This guy is not a bad guy, he's a great guy. I don't want to think that republicans hate poor people. I don't want to think that they think people should do everything on their own with no help, and if they can't, screw 'em, let 'em die. Some people I love more than anything are republicans. But do I have any choice to believe anything but that? Has the republican party done anything to contradict that view of them?

I wonder, do you spend any time in volunteer work to actually create change or serve others? As a Republican woman who works in social services, I look around at the food bank I'm in and see ... Republicans ... serving clients, stocking shelves, repackaging food. It's been the same at every place I've volunteered for 20 years. I live in WA, a liberal state, and don't see the "compassionate Democrats" putting their time where their mouths are.

So, do you volunteer? How do you plan to make this a better country?

My first thought was "I am INSULTED that they imagined she would appeal to me at all."

God help us if she and McCain make it to the White House. Not only does she not know what the VP does, but she's dumb enough to say so. And since it's pretty simple (upholding the Constitution, anyone?) it's a little scary that she has no idea. Also scary that she's so quick to dismiss the First Amendment. As a librarian in a small town, I would be pretty upset if my mayor walked in and asked how she could go about banning the books she and her friends didn't like. That's not how democracy works.

She's an absolute shark. I respected McCain before, even if I didn't agree with him. Now, no way. And it's so disheartening that so many Americans want these people to lead our nation.

I want Barack, Hillary, etc. out there stomping all over McCain and his "partner." I want those two to be so soundly defeated that Republicans aren't elected anywhere ever again. I want Alaska given to Russia as a Christmas gift.

    I want her GONE.

MY THOUGHTS on Palin from my blog....

I am not political. I am really sorta ANTI-political, if there is such a thing. I know, I know….politics effects us all and we should care about one side or the other yada, yada, yada…..but I don’t. The whole spectacle just frustrates me. So I just try to IGNORE it. (do you hate me yet?). I do vote. I research at the last minute and make a decision. So I vote. That is good right?

BUT. I. HAVE.TO. COMMENT on Mccain’s VP choice. Because sometimes I have no control over this blog and my typing hands….I MUST. I like to say the things I think people might be THINKING….but are afraid to say outloud lest they offend others. I guess I am a natural offender.

First, the whole ‘joke’ about hockey moms and bulldogs was offensive. To both sport moms and well, bulldogs. Just exactly whose vote is she trying to get?

She has a 4 month old BABY. Um, a baby with special needs (Down Syndrome) no less. I am pretty damn sure when my kids were 4 months old I was in no position to be running a country. Heck when they were 4 months old I could barely get a shower everyday. And they were still feeding in the middle of the night-so spent most days in a zombie like state until nap time. When I may or may not have passed out on the floor next to the baby’s crib daily. Okay so…..you (you being those who support his choice) might say- oh but she will have HELP if elected. White House nannies I guess. (do they have those? and if they do, do they wear those secret service ear pieces?)……SO she is gonna let someone else help raise her kid I guess. Along with her fishing snowmobiling husband. Not exactly the kind of mom the kid was probably hoping to get. Some mom’s HAVE to work. But does SHE? We criticise celebrities FREELY about their nannies and ability to spend so much time away from their children. How they go back to work immediately-even if they obviously don’t need the income. Um, how then is this any different? How can I be expected to think her choices AS A MOTHER are a good reflection on HER CHOICES as A VP of A COUNTRY?

And what is with having a baby at 44? By choice? She had to know the increase % in complications and possibility for special needs to the child. Oh wait- perhaps an accident surprise? Do they not HAVE birth control in her ’small town’? Perhaps that is the same cause of her 17 year old daughter’s pregnancy as well. Like mother, like daughter? But most shocking to me, was the fact that her 19 year old son has enlisted to the military. I think the men and women fighting for our country are…I say without hesitation…absolute HEROS….BUT would I encourage my son to join in the middle of a WAR? I am praying this was not a ploy to help the campaign. And I am praying he (along with all the other CHILDREN in Iraq) come home safe.

I am all about women doing all the jobs that men can do blah, blah, blah. But not at the expense of their CHILDREN. Sure you can DO it ALL. But NOT all at the SAME TIME. And if you try to do it all at the same time…something WILL SUFFER.

So as you can see I know next to nothing when it comes to politics. I know McCain has a better deal on taxes for me. And I know Obama has a pencil mustache that is really obvious on a 60? plasma screen TV but his wife seems pretty together. Oh that and his catch phrase is CHANGE. Which as it sits right now- no matter which side wins…there is gonna be plenty of change in the white house. PLEN.TY. Including and not limited to the possibility of DIAPERS. And I am not talking about McCain this time.

Your friendly, neighborhood, lesbian veterinarian here. I'm voting McCain/Palin and I think Sarah Palin represents what is right in America.

I currently live in Canada, land of universal health care, sort of. It's universal access to a waiting list. You'll sometimes wait a year for an appointment with a surgeon, another 18 months for an MRI, and then 2 more years before surgery is scheduled. And that first appointment with a surgeon, is usually once you are unable to walk on the knee or hip.

Every man, woman, and child in Ontario is charged an average of $450/month for health care through taxes. So take that struggling family and take another $1,800 a month out of their pockets.

The French system is much better. I wish we in Canada and the USA would emulate it. John McCain and Sarah Palin are in a better position to cut government waste and use monies toward health care than Obama/Biden are.

George Bush will not be the president after this term. McCain has never fit the typical republican or democratic profile. This will be the administration that is our best hope for real change and for a government that really listens to the needs of the citizens, not lines the pockets of themselves and their friends.

I feel your pain. A bit of my own thinking on the matter of being dealt the 'pre-exisiting condition' card, that came about when I put the first bumpersticker ever on my car:

I'm not about to forget the pain of being trapped by a healthcare system that simply does not work.

When Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination, I listened intently to his speech, applauding loudly in the living room when he said, "As someone who watched my mother argue with insurance companies while she lay in bed dying of cancer, I will make certain those companies stop discriminating against those who are sick and need care the most."

And it wasn't just that part. There were So. Many. Issues. where I agreed with Barack's values, judgment, and vision. (and his policies outlined online back it up)

With my optimism beaten by many months of smears, negative ads and disturbing commentary on and offline, I needed to be reintroduced to these ideals.

"Hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess."

    Indeed.

I'm reminded not to waiver. It is not enough to just get by and try to do good. It is time to to roll up my sleeves and find a way to be of service.

The "O" bumpersticker I just put on my car is not just a statement to someone following me on the road--It is a reminder to myself; However things turn out this election, I need to hold these notions dear. Together, we can make things happen, no matter what cards we're dealt.

    To #922 Ivan,
Do you really think Bristol Palin ever had a choice? She is a minor, and her mother has always been anti-choice. I'll bet it never crossed her mind. Normally I would say, "leave the teenager alone", but in this case, Sarah Palin has brought it upon herself. She is so vehemently anti-choice, she doesn't believe in that choice even for victims of rape or incest. She also is for teaching abstinence only education in Alaska. Didn't really work for Bristol, did it? That, to me, is an example of a failed policy, which makes it a relevant topic of public discussion. As someone who has used birth control (at times, by the fistful) for more than 20 years, and the mother of two children, let me assure you it is by no means 100% effective. Women need to have options. Period. And frankly, until you men can grow a uterus and carry a baby to term, I don't believe you get to be part of the abortion debate.

The more I learn about Sarah Palin, the more scared I get. This is the first time I've ever felt like leaving the country if an administration gets elected -- and not just because she wants to take away a woman's right to choose (HOW? HOW can any woman do that, especially in cases of rape or incest? HOW???). I teach at a public school in Watts; many of my students and their families don't have health insurance, and that's just ONE of the many awful issues they have to deal with. To the person who said, "I am tired of all the conservatives talking about money and all the liberals wanting to help people," WHAT'S WRONG WITH HELPING PEOPLE??? My husband went to college and then he went to law school - just graduated this May. He came here 12 years ago with nothing, and he loves this country because it allowed him the opportunity to EARN a good life. However, we now owe $60K in law school loans, and we are struggling financially. He can't work as an attorney until his bar exam results come back Oct 31, so now he is about to start a second job JUST TO MAKE THE $400/MONTH LOAN PAYMENTS. (I'm working part time while raising our 2-yr old son.) What most people don't consider is that there probably aren't half as many "lazy jobless bums" who need help as there are honest, hard-working people (many of us who are college graduates!) just struggling to stay on their feet.

And honestly, Republicans don't want the government to give to the needy, they'd rather do it themselves? Really? How many Republicans gave all or part of their tax rebates this year to CHARITY?

    Heather,

I love your blog and have been reading it for about 3-4 years. I don't agree with everything you say, of course, but who ever does in a free society? I have the choice to keep reading or not.

I am self-employed, as is my husband, and we have no health insurance - I was denied because I have anxiety and depression and am on medication for both. (Sound familiar, Heather?) I pay $300 a month for medicine alone...everything else we cover out-of-pocket. You of all people should know how debilitating depression and anxiety can be and yet I don't expect others to pick up slack for me or support me in any way. It is my responsibility.

We had to get an extension on our taxes because we haven't the cash to pay them (yes, we are one of the 67% of household in America that actually pay taxes.) I have a college degree, write software, and have a very high IQ. I am voting for McCain/Palin. You might ask why someone as educated and smart and 'lucky' as me would vote that way.

Because here's the reality: I am responsible for my own health care, not the 'government.' I am responsible for paying my mortgage, buying my food, repairing my car and generally taking care of my own life - not the government. I am not ENTITLED to anything other than the rights guaranteed under the constitution (didn't see health care in that doc.) I just had a $5,000 dental procedure and I'm not crying foul, I don't feel mad or angry that no one's stepping in to cover it for me. I am scrambling to find the money to cover it, trying to figure out more ways to generate income for myself, but I will cover that damn bill. Because it's my responsibility and no one else's.

It amazes me that Democrats are all about 'pro-choice' except for when it comes to the choice to take home the money people earn with their labor. I wasn't fortunate enough to have a family that paid for my college education (lucky you) so I did it the hard way - worked full time and went to school full time. Woke up at 4:30 am and got home at 10 pm. And it was WORK. But I earned that degree, finally, when I was 29 and I am PROUD of that - most things you work for do bring you pride.

It's laughable to say you feel this way only because of your concern for those 'less fortunate'. You're so generous to offer 'more' of your paycheck...how about 70%? Does that work for you? I didn't think so. Don't say it will never happen because it heppens in Canada now.

Case in point: I met a man from Trinidad and Tobago the other day. He had emigrated here from Canada (where he first moved from T and T) because he couldn't save any money there(hard to do that in the 60-70% tax bracket). He had heart problems but couldn't get treatment there either - takes at least a year to get in to see a cardiologist. Unless, of course, you have the money to cross the border and pay cash here in America. We have other friends who emigrated back from Canada and they loved the health care system there. Why? Because they NEVER NEEDED catastrophic care. So anecdotes can be sited to support any position. The difference between these two anecdotes is that the second couple loved the health care system because they never had to test it. That's frickin' scary.

And all those other countries with 'socialized' medicine? Their systems are failing. England has already abandoned their complete entitlement system. They now have a two-tiered program where they can pay more for a higher level of care - otherwise they get the basic government program. How, in the long run, does that benefit the poor? It just marginalizes them once again, turning them in to second-tier citizens who don't have access to the best health care. Isn't that supposed to be the horrible thing about medical care here?

The whole 'we just want to take care of those less fortunate' is a bunch of shit. How much do you donate to charities? How much do all your liberal buddies donate to charity? Probably not a whole lot because 'the government should take care of those less fortunate'. You put down conservatives for being 'selfish' and yet who are, by FAR, the largest donors to charities nationwide? You need to check yourself because it's conservatives. That's right, we take the money we EARN and we give it to others for their benefit and assistance. We do it frequently and in large amounts...without any interference or coercion from the government. We also donate more volunteer hours, by far, than liberals do. It's appalling that you are ignorant of that fact as it completely negates your argument about our 'selfish' ways.

How much time do you spend with the 'less fortunate' or 'needy'. Not really my business but I ask because the Democrats seem to think that throwing money at problems is the only answer. Some people need time and mentoring and someone to come along side and support them. Money doesn't do crap for those people, does it? They need human contact and people to meet them where they are.

All of you liberals need to come out of your glass houses, roll up your sleeves and get to work. Stop bitching about how horrible everyone else is and start effecting change yourself. Shut up and help. It will make you all feel better, I guarantee it.

The bottom line: the difference between Republicans and Democrats is that we don't just talk about giving money and time to others, we do it.

I just have one quick thing to add . . which I've seen a few comment about here.

Please please please everyone read articles and take a look at what Socialized Medicine has done in other countries. Ask your Canadian or British (or any other) friends in places with such socialized policies. It's not as wonderful as it seems. Don't let them blind you about "Health Care for all". Keep in mind, that no matter what type of medicine you have in place . . . you still get what you pay for. And if you're not paying anything, and relying on the government to tell you what kind of health care you should be receiving? . . . you'll like that even less.

I absolutely agree that health care needs reform. But the reform needs to come mostly from the Insurance companies and the Drug companies . . . who are running health care around in crazy, expensive, impossible to pay for circles.

The State of Ohio runs a program called the Hospital Care Assurance program . . . for people just like the ones Heather listed above. Most hospitals in this state also run 'charity' programs . . . and give patients help with bills when they cannot afford them. Many States offer the same programs.

I'm definitely leaning towards the Obama side . . but again . . for those thinking that Obama stepping into the White House is going to cause ripples of CHANGE . . please pull your head out of your ass.

And one more thing . . . for those of you who think Global Warming is real? Please pull your head out of your local reporters ass.

DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH please GOD/DOG/ALLAH/BUDDAH/JEHOVA or anyone that you might see as a higher power. Do NOT listen to the Media. They're just puppets.

Good God, when are you people going to wake up and realize that McCain is NOT Bush!!!!!

Just because he is a Republican does not mean that he's going to take us the same route as Bush did. We all know how many shades of F'ed up that election was, or is that just too convenient to forget?

So by the same logic, because Obama is a Democrat, does that mean he's going to have a little hanky panky with some intern in the Oval Office, IF he even makes it there?

I am so TIRED of these foreigners leaving snarky comments that generalize the American people as all the same. We're not, just like not all you Europeans and Australians aren't the same. It's very insulting, and I, for one, would never generalize all your countrymen the same.

Yes, our health care system is extremely flawed, but that does not mean that it can't work for everyone. I think that we need to fix what's in place before some guy with Hope! and Change! gets in there to put something new into place.

My father has non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He is 88 years old, and he reluctantly agreed to 4 chemo treatments as paliative care. Fortunately (because he was in the Carpenter's Union), they do have health care. If they *didn't* have health care, guess how much those 4 shots would have cost?

Did you guess $10,000? Nope. Higher.

    $20,000? Nope. Higher.

    $30,000? Nope. Higher.

It would have cost $33,000. For 4 shots. Four. Shots.

My devout Catholic mum, who has always used the pro-life issue as her litmus test for candidates, told me quite frankly that, with the situation this country is in, abortion is way down on her list of priorities. Number 1? Health care. She's voting for Obama.

Does Obama have all the answers? No. And he's not going to get stuff done all by himself, he's not being elected king. You vote for someone for the general philosophy that they espouse, the ideologies they believe it, the people they are likely to surround themselves with. What's his temperament? How does he make decisions? What's his grasp of the issues? Where, generally, does he want to go?

In case you haven't seen it, Jon Stewart does a lovely compare and contrast (now v. then) of what the Republicans are saying about Palin and the myriad of issues surrounding her candidacy. It's wonderful stuff. He's the next Tim Russert.

    Hang in there, sweetie.

Heather, I agree with everything you said.

Here is another thing that DRIVES ME CRAZY: Palin's support of abstinence-only education (vs. proper family planning and sex ed) for teenagers.

So now her 17-year old daughter is 5-months pregnant. It wasn't planned; daughter isn't married. Yes, the daughter plans to marry the father, etc. and maybe they'll defy the odds and actually stick together, but I'd bet thousands of dollars they don't last.

CAN SOME JOURNALIST PLEASE ask Sarah Palin to her face if she still believes abstinence-only education works, when her own daughter obviously didn't follow the plan? Not all teenagers have a wealthy family to bail them out if an accident happens, so perhaps giving teenagers some education so they can make informed choices would help? Would she possibly admit that? I can not believe that McCain and Palin have gotten off so lightly thus far.

I'm not liberal, but I donate 10% of my income to charities that actually spend it well. None of the liberals I know give anything significant to charity (including Obama, before he became a Senator); they just expect someone else to pay for an inefficient behemoth to give handouts. Hypocrisy: that's worth ranting about.

What's also fascinating is that I could find no such "fact check story" from either this same author that "fact checked" Palin's speech (JIM KUHNHENN ) nor the Associated Press, which ran his "Palin Fact Check" story.

JIM KUHNHENN did write a story covering Barack Obama's convention address which was basically a puff piece that noted that during his convention speech Obama had asked his audience to send text messages out to drum up support for the Obama campaign.

It's discrepancies like these that lend weight to the belief that the press is thoroughly "in the bag" for Obama.

To assume that the only reason that people don't have access to healthcare is that their parents couldn't afford to send them to college is incredibly short-sighted. I live in a low-income community and have accompanied many friends to the food-stamps office, but honestly, I think that there's a mix of people out there. Some are definitely trying to just pull their lives together and need help. Others are more than thrilled that the government will come in and give them money so that they can stay at home.

From what I've seen, at least in the state of California, those who qualify for food stamps also usually qualify for Medical, which has covered all of their medical expenses. I do think, though, that it would be nice for those caught in the middle-class squeeze to have more affordable options for health care.

It is offensive that the Republican Party seems to think that if they get a younger woman as a pick for the VP they'll get more votes. It's kind of sad that the Democrats think that a great speaker is all we need for President, too. Obama represents hope and what's great about his campaign is that whatever your hope for change is can be applied. The country is such a disaster right now, Obama can't really go wrong. Too bad McCain didn't win 8 years ago, who knows what might have happened.

BTW, I noticed there were only quotes from the RNC in that article. Is the assumption that the Democrats never stretch the truth or it just wasn't written about in that article? Come on folks, this is politics.

So her and my stepfather had to file bankruptcy due to medical bills. they have now been living with my boyfriend and i, who make about $25,000 a year together. and here we are supporting ourselves and my parents for the last 4 years. my stepdad works so hard, 2 jobs and they barely have anything. my mother and us, with what money we have, struggle to decide what prescriptions of hers we can afford to get filled and what ones have to wait. she cant get help anywhere and is denied any assistance. each month is tough and makes us wonder if she'll make it to the next and have any supplies for her insulin pump.

I have lived in the Midwest and the South as well as the East. It's all America, right? They have the right to different beliefs, different priorities. When you stereotype people and mock their political leanings, you create another, separate "class-" one that feels incredibly defensive and misunderstood. If the point of this next election is to unify and heal a broken nation, then these attacks are really not helping anyone's cause.

Heather, I am so with you as far as wanting a change in Washington. Speaking of folks who work their asses off and are still poor, I have a friend who works very hard at his full-time job, is well-educated in his field and who's government salary does not cover the expenses of his family of four, including two small children. He actually qualifies for housing assistance.

And speaking of insurance, what about the need for good insurance coverage for parents? If the parent doesn't have health insurance and gets sick... the children will suffer. The parent may not go to the doctor because he or she knows that they won't be able to pay the bills, so the parent may become much more ill (or be more likely to die) than a parent who has insurance and can easily go to the Dr and get appropriate care in a timely fashion. And, if the parent has thousands of dollars in hospital, Dr, treatment bills, is the parent going to be able to buy food, clothing, basic necessities for his or her child?

This country needs big changes, and leaders who care about ALL people in America. I believe that George W once said that he just didn't understand poor people. Well, duh! He's certainly never been poor, so how could he?

Thanks for being willing to speak out about the Presidential election on your blog, Heather...

If you were not as fortunate as you apparently are, your child would be eligible for Medicaid and/or FAMIS or whatever your state calls this medical coverage for low income families. The truth about the alleged medical insurance problem is that the majority of folks that don't have it are young people who choose to not have it. It would be great if we had unlimited resources to pay for everyone to have everything. That is just not realistic. And the truth about GWB is that he has spent more money on entitlement programs (example Medicare D; billions on AIDS relief in Africa) than even Clinton. He just doesn't get it that he will be hated by the libs no matter how much money he throws at people. Honestly, as a Canadian, I am completely dumbfounded that a country that is as wealthy, educated and religious as the US doesn't see that the current situation regarding public heathcare isn't absolutely insane. Everytime I hear a story such as your wrote above about the unbelievable cost of insurance and the crazy choices Americans must make, I'm stunned. It's like I'm reading some novel set in the middle ages in Europe. That it simply can't be true.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of things that we could tweak with the Canadian healthcare system, but all things must change and adapt. The point is that we would consider it barbaric to not provide healthcare for everyone. And it isn't free. We still pay premiums. But my family pays the maximum for the province I live in: $108 per month. For a family of 6. Sure, extras may cost you more (like more than 10 visits to the physiotherapist in a year) and yes, we don't have very many fancy doctor's offices or hospitals. But even with the issues, such as it can be tricky to find a family doctor, the point is that if I am stricken with cancer, I can get lifesaving treatment and it doesn't cost more than the $108 I currently pay per month. Better yet, my monthly premium doesn't go up after I survive.

The thing is, my standard of living as an average Canadian I think is about the same any average. So the "extra" taxes I pay to cover this national healthcare plan clearly haven't made my life intolerable. I still get nice vacations. We have two cars. We have a nice house, etc. Which makes me think those in the US who claim it would be too costly, or that they would have to pay too much extra in taxes have got it wrong. And instead they are afraid of doing something, afraid of change. Either that or the people in power in the US have managed to all model themselves after Scrooge.

Ok, enough blather. Thanks for another great post. And the link to the AP article.

I'm a new reader of your blog, and although I was becoming a fan- I was a little uncomfortable with what was becoming a blindingly obvious omission- until today. As a parent our #1 priority must always be our children, (although we are allowed to be as cynical about that as we like, of course). This election is so important, made all the more by a VP pick who does not believe in evolutionary science, global warming, sex education, or, it appears, fair and honest political discourse. I feel as mothers, it is incredibly important to weigh in on this election as the result will have such reverberating impact on our children. America has been on such a self destructive course the past 8 years and we need to pull a huge u turn for the sake of our children.

Thank you also for putting so eloquently the hypocrisy of the social conservative compassionate/Christian/family values agenda. What is more Christian than helping those in need? Why deny families who have never had any of the opportunities I'm guessing so many of your readers are lucky enough to have had, some help? And what is more American than that? I am so sick of hearing Republicans scream about "not letting anyone take our money!" Jeez...I would much rather give it to well organized social programs than Haliburton/Kellogg Root!

The only thing I see Palin is someone pretty look at for the next four years, just as I see the first lady. I do not know anything about her really, and I figure I am still voting for Ron Paul.

I am a conservative, not a liberal and I have found that the Republicans in office are just as liberal with the Constitution as the Democrats.

Republicans give the tax money to big businesses, the Democrats give the tax money to lazy people and both make decisions for the people instead of letting the people make decisions for themselves, responsibility. Just like Christian Stewardship works.

With giving money and power to Big Businesses makes it harder for the working class because of businesses being in position to take advantage of workers, which is not free-trade like they say.

The Democrats do the same thing except they make it easier for people to sue for no good damn reason. Making it more expensive to go to the doctor.

I have my own business, with this business I can hire five people to make an honest (close to over high class living wages) living working for me, enough to pay for insurance and comfortable home, two cars, and a dog. That last part is a joke, but their is no shortage of money, that I know of. While their wife stays at home and takes care of the kids. I also take the pleasure of quietly paying every month for part of two under privileged families rent/insurance/groceries. I have asked these families indirectly to not accept government help, as I will help until they can stand on their own two feet.

I do this because I was taught Christian Stewardship, even as I make a bucket load of money for myself. I take no tax money (because I do not hire people that would be unqualified or hire someone I do not trust could do the job) and if I get a tax break it goes to the people that work for me or to help other people

I do not need the government to tell me what to do with my money, I have divine help to do that. And sometimes I wonder how much more I could help if I did not have a chunk of my money being taken out of my pocket.

I am a Canadian. I live in the province of B.C.

I pay $108 each month for my family of 4 for health care (3 or more in a family pays a maximum of $108 each month.) I can walk into a doctor's office or walk-in clinic and receive treatment by showing my CareCard. I went to the hospital 16 and 13 years ago and had a baby - each time! - by showing my CareCard.

My mother is a widow living with cancer for almost 20 years now. She pays $54/month for health care. She had surgery, and has been going for regular specialist visits and receiving medication all by showing her CareCard.

The trade off is I pay a little bit extra for gas, a little bit extra for everyday purchase, and see a little bit more taken off of my paycheque. Is it worth it? What value do you put on having your kid's grandma around for 20 (and more!) years without going broke? It's too high to define.

Universal health care is not the devil.

I'm sure I'm not contributing anything new to this but...

I live in Juneau and was shocked as hell to hear that Palin was the VP nominee. She has gone back on so many campaign promises while running for governor, and has not been kind to southeast Alaska, including trying to move the capital up North...where she lives.

she is only on board the children-with-special-needs bandwagon because she just had a baby with Down's Syndrome.

and I'm sorry, call me an un-feminist, but as a new mother to a 4-month old, and someone who is struggling to keep up with work, motherhood, my house, my husband, my family, and my friends, I don't understand how she could possibly provide enough attention to a child with special needs if she were the VP of the United States. I adore my baby so much that if I didn't HAVE to work, I wouldn't. Fortunately, my parents are retired and watch my baby for me. so not only do I not have to pay $1000 a month for daycare, but my baby is fostering a relationship with her grandparents.

I cannot thank you enough for this post. Everything contained in it so needed to be said.

I don't go out of my way to talk to Republicans anymore because I just get infuriated. I'm tired of being told to have an "open mind" about others political leanings. I don't agree with the selfish gimme-gimme attitude of most Republicans and I never will---no matter how open my mind is.

On a personal note: Three months after getting married, I got pregnant. My husband and I had both recently started new jobs and our 90 day waiting period for insurance wasn't over yet. I had to get government assistance. As a white middle class gal, I was mortified. I thought gov't assistance was for scumbags who didn't work. Needless to say, the few months I was on assistance humbled me and changed me in a way nothing else since ever has.

That was almost eleven years ago and I haven't needed government assistance again. If a Republican saw me eleven years ago, pregnant and broke, I'm sure they would have thought I was someone wanting something for nothing. That couldn't have been further from the truth.

Everyone should be poor once in their life.

I'll gladly stack up our volunteer work and charitable contributions against any liberal. We do it because we want to help and we think we can do it better than the government.

I guess liberals are too busy reading Kant and Aristotle to actually get their hands dirty and help. Screw it...just make the government do it.

I couldn't agree more. My Mormon family & I (and esp. my sister whose husband is ex-military) do not discuss politics AT ALL.

See, my husband & I were one of those families that needed help. When we became pregnant with our son, we were both still in college - older (mid-20s) but in school. And both working. But neither with benefits like health insurance.

Things were really hard for a while. I was on WIC and then we were on food stamps for a couple years. But I do not apologize for that. You know what? I've lived on my own, working & paying taxes since I was 18.

We didn't go on public assistance and then stay on it forever. We went on it while we finished school, got jobs and became productive, tax-paying members of society. THAT'S WHAT IT'S FUCKING THERE FOR. Thank god it was. Otherwise one or both of us would've had to drop out of school to make ends meet. We most certainly would not be where we are now, 15 years later.

Healthcare is a basic human right. You shouldn't have to chose between seeking medical care and feeding your family. God help this county if we put another Republican in office.

    Heather you are soooooooooooooooooo right!

I see healthcare as THE major issue no major candidate will discuss.

Is it right that companies and corporations have to foot half the insurance premiums for their employees - taking that money right out of their bottom line?

Is it right that certain people have better (cost effective) insurance than others just by virtue of where they work? Case in point -- me!

10 years ago I was struggling to pay high private health insurance premiums. My employer (my Dad) did not offer health insurance since his company was under 50+ employees. My private insurance - major coverage with a very high deductible - went up 40% one pay period. I couldn't afford it and was dropped. I had to quit my Dad's company and get work with another that offered health insurance to their employees. That was the only way i could pay my bills. On the other hand, my sister works for the federal government and has a very comprehensive insurance plan for her family

Health insurance in this country is catch-as catch-can.

I am freelancing now. Private insurance again, but it is Blue Cross of Blue Shield of IL which I think is a more reputable company then the no name I had before.

    You tell it Heather!

    Heather -
O.k. I took a step back for over an hour in order to think things through before I put my comment out there. I am an independent voter; yet I vote Republican most of the time mainly because I like their message and values.

I am also a patriot, a stay at home mom and a wife. Can you please explain to me because I have never been able to understand the absolute anger and hatred that the majority of liberals have in their tone when they speak about their beliefs and their values.

We had 8 years of Clinton (whom I voted for) and feel he did a great job (his values and dedication to his wife sucked) but I think he was a very charismatic leader. It is also a "fact" that he had the opportunity to capture BinLaden and did not do so. Because of that "grave" error we lost thousands of lives on 9/11. Do you blame Bush for that too??

Also, I thought Hillary was going to "fix" the health care system. Uh, yeah, that never happened. Were you this angry at her and your party as you are today with conservative citizens that don't agree with you?

My main point to you Heather and John (yes I read his Blog too and damn he is a politically angry man also). We have a lot of freedoms in this country that citizens in other countries are not granted. Furthermore, research the cost of gas and living expenses in England, Canada, Austria, Italy, Germany etc... They have been paying high prices for many, many years we are (unfortunately) catching up; furthermore, the cost of living always rises during war time. In my opinion a war that Bush did not create Bin Laden and Hussein created the war by attacking our innocent citizens. (oh gosh, please don't write how you don't believe they were linked because to me that would be an insane argument). Now, I realize war sucks, I hate it; my nephew to two tours of duty in Iraq during the very beginning and thank God he came home a proud soldier and a grateful man that he lives in this country.

I also feel that we have the right to voice our opinions because of freedom of speech; therefore, you are entitled to your opinion and this independent, conservative, mostly republican fan is entitled to hers (just without the anger).

Do realize Heather that ALL politicians have their own agendas, they are all crooked on some level and you can only pray for the best outcome. I just have a feeling in my gut that someone that attended church with the "Reverend Wright" as he was spewing propaganda and hate speech towards my country can not possibly be the answer.

I will continue to read your blog because I truly like your writing and I enjoy everything you offer to your readers through your stories. I always put on my big girl panties during a debate so I can handle that we don't agree on this issue and I don't think I need to just read my other favorite blog "Amalah" just because you stated an opinion different than mine.

Oh, and by the way this flaky chick would have voted for Hillary because I believe she truly would have been the right choice and I would have loved another Clinton era "so there" !! :-)

Posting here from New Zealand, where the front page of the Herald paper is raving about how awesome Sarah Palin is. Going back to how I was brought up, anyone as arrogant and fake as her, is someone not to be believed. What NZ'ers don't get is that her speech was merely spoken by her...all the thought and pithy sayings were written by a random.
My main thought is - how can you possibly care for a 5 month old baby, and be VP of the most important country in the world?
But reading the comments here also sparked another thought - that it's often children of hard-working conservative parents who become liberal - because they've never had the wolf at their door (yes I'm speaking generally). I bust a gut at work and have very little spending money left over - and the thought of higher taxes will always win me over. As an Australian, I'm watching this presidential race with shock and awe. Here, there is no choice in whether you vote in an election - if you're an adult, you vote. It scares me that McCain/Palin might get in, just because a huge number of Americans don't care enough to vote. It scares me that there *is* a huge number of Americans who don't care enough to vote. That's almost worse than the fact that there are people who would vote for McCain/Palin and what they stand for.
We're a pretty highly taxed nation, but I'm glad we pay all those taxes and have universal healthcare for everyone and readily available social welfare rather than face the alternative.

I gave up talking to my family about politics ages ago. And we're Canadian and all agree on fundamental things like universal health care is a necessity.

I feel badly for you, like I want to smuggle you up here to Canada or something.

My youngest son was born with a fractured skull and as a result he had neurosurgery at one of the finest children's hospitals in the world when he wasn't even twenty-four hours old. And it did not cost us a cent. There was no bill to pay afterward. All we had to worry about was our son and that was quite enough to worry about.

In Canada, we may have to pay more in taxes for this kind of access to public health care but I can tell you that the extra money deducted from my pay is entirely worth it. It is even more wonderful knowing that even if people, (particularly children) doesn't have much money they still have access to that kind of health care.

I cross my fingers and just hope things change.

Wow. I have enjoyed your blog on a regular basis for several years, but now one of three things is going on:
    1. You are only allowing posting of the comments that agree with you (which I don't think you would do?)
    2. No other Bible-totin', gun carrying conservatives read your blog, or
    3. The Bible-totin', gun carrying conservatives are keeping silent here.

I grew up in a family on welfare and food stamps. I busted my ass and worked three jobs to get through college. Then I went to law school, clipping coupons and driving a 10 year old vehicle so that my husband and I could survive on $18k a year. We didn't need the government to help us. And even if we did, there are plenty of programs available.

Health insurance? Yeah...it sucks. We pay $800 a month for semi-decent coverage and we are all very healthy. If you want socialized health care, talk to someone from Canada and see how it's working up there. Then decide if you really want it here. IT IS NOT THE GOVERNMENT'S JOB TO PROVIDE HEALTH CARE. Support a crack down on the people ripping of the system )(Medicare and Medicaid fraud would be a good start) if you want to help with the health care crisis. If you are willing to donate some of your income to help someone pay their health insurance, have at it. Who is stopping you? You can voluntarily pay more taxes any day of the week...Uncle Sam won't turn it away, I promise.

    I will miss your humor.

Ugh. I don't even live in the US and this upsets me so.
I've often wondered why in the US there are so many healthcare problems (insurance problems), and after watching Michael Moore's SICKO it become clear. Brainwash the people. Make them think universal health care will take away their freedom of choice. Bingo, it works.

PLEASE! Give me a break Heather. Neither my husband or I came from a white middle class family that could afford to send us to college...but we did it. No excuses! It was hard and we did it. There is really no excuse for anyone who lives in this country not to better themselves. I have lived in many countries all over the world, and we have so many opportunities to help ourselves here in the U.S. As a teacher in inner - city schools, I have seen so many people work the system and it gets really old when you see their kids come to school in $100 shoes while mom drives a tricked out Hummer.
There have been many times where our family could have said "Poor us...we are just too poor to help ourselves." We started off with no money, no cars...we went to college. My husband went to Iraq for 14 months and we fell on very hard times when he got home...we helped ourselves back up on our own two feet. Our toddler was diagnosed with cancer and we had to leave our jobs...we got back on our feet. It can be done. Our family is living proof.
We can help people by teaching them to help themselves. Throwing our money at them just gives them a crutch.

As a Canadian, and as someone who has lived in Europe and certain Asian countries with universal healthcare, it astonished me that commenters on that blog thought universal healthcare was 'socialist' and one step away from 'communism' and that it just enabled 'freeloaders' to steal their money.

The fact is, the US has one of, if not the highest budget of any OECD country, and yet leaves more Americans uninsured than the entire population of Canada. There are other reasons to disagree with universal health coverage, but the ridiculously selfish and individualistic idea that someone else is riding off your coattails is NOT one of them.

The difference between you and I is how we want to go about it. I don't want my help to be federally mandated. I want to choose, or not choose, to give my money (or time, or food, or skill) to people who need it.

You said, "If giving up more of my paycheck could help get this family adequate healthcare, then PLEASE. TAKE MY FUCKING MONEY." I think that you should be able to give this family as much of your pay check as you choose to give them. But you should be able to choose the amount and people to whom you want to give.

It's your money. You earned it. YOU should dictate where it goes. Not the federal government.

Sarah Palin has more class in her little finger than you will ever have in your liberal self-absorbed little world. When you start writing specifically how you have "helped" the homeless and the minorities, reformed the welfare and health care systems, stopped global warming (the biggest lie ever invented) then solve the oil crisis, plus birth five children without having to be in a mental institute (you can't even cope with one), raise a Downs Syndrome child, deal with a pregnate teen daughter and send your son to Iraq and be governor in the largest state in the US then you might be worth taking seriously. You know you're coming to some kind of understanding
When every dream you've dreamed has passed and you're still standing

So count your ribs and say your prayers and get to sleep
Nothing is louder to god's ears than a poor mans sorrow
Daddy is poor today and he will be poor tomorrow

Hey that's the poor man's house
Everybody get a look at the poor man's house
Everywhere they went before must have turned them out
And now they're living in a poor man's house

There's nothing like poverty to get you into heaven
They got a lot of wine and fish up there
    And the bread's unleavened
They got a lot of ears that heard a whip go crack
Lots of missing toes and fingers and scars upon their backs
Daddy's been working too much for days and days
    He doesn't eat
He never says much but I think this time it's got him beat
It isn't that he isn't strong or kind or clever
    Your daddy's poor today
And he will be poor forever

Tey that's the poor man's house
Those kids are living in a poor man's house
They walk to school with the soles of their shoes worn out
And come home in the evening to the poor man's house

What are you chopping that wood for
Why are you growing that corn
Mama's sewing a brand new shirt and
You're wearing the one that's torn
I guess it's for some one elses kid who wasn't born
    In a poor man's house

Hey take a look at that house

I can put words to my anger at John McCain and the constipated, slick dick, Republican National Party for choosing Sarah Palin as the VP pick.

If Olympia Snowe had been on that stage last night, there would have been plenty of freaking substance as well as some shining light on working to save this country.

Ooops, with Olympia as a RNP VP pick, McCain would be pretty McLame, as Olympia is well known as being a MODERATE Republican who frequently canvasses across party lines for Country First.

Oh Oh Oh and Olympia IS an eternally experienced State Senator and she DOES sit on high profile Senate Committes.... was married to a Maine Governor, and just rocks in her commitment to public service for her constituency and her country.

But Olympia is not a Bowflex 44 anymore, not "hot" and doesn't have kids that can be unfurled like flags to match or mismatch her own or her RNParty's concept of the day, week, month.

McLame may have considered Snowe, but that would have risked Olympia making McCain look stoopid and retro as in Old White Man Last of the M'Cains, especially when it got down to a Snowe and Biden debate ( which might have been a real treat for voters to follow, considering Biden and Snowe have A LOT of shared time in the halls of politics.)

I'm rightfully pissed off as an Independant Voter that Sarah Palin is seen as THE new window dressing for a dreary REPUGNANT party that can't connect within themselves to actually effect responsible social CHANGE.

Dang, how does Sarah Palin stack up when she can't see for herself that she is being used way outside her efficacy?

    That is scary.

Umm...not to sound like a nutjob, but, our country's welfare system is broken. The case you gave of the man working 3 jobs, well, he and his family would not qualify for any welfare support in our country. The maximum salary for someone to qualify for welfare is so low that anyone having a job working full time making minimum wage would not qualify. Our system supports/encourages people without/not willing to get jobs. No, McCain hasn't addressed how to fix this. But, neither has Obama.

People from other countries do not understand why we do not have a more socialist form of medicine. That is because in America, we reward people with "free" medicine to the people who do not work. If we could make a system to where, unless you were disabled, you had to have proof of a full time job to qualify, it might could work. People say they can't find jobs though. I'm sorry, but Wal-Mart hires everyday. If someone wants a job, they can get one.

Also, as for the people who don't have insurance, any state run hospital is REQUIRED to see and treat anyone, regardless of insurance. If they can't pay their bill, it gets written off. Even in my state of Mississippi, we have that. There is no reason why someone should have to let a broken arm not be set.

Yes, Palin is not qualified to be the VP. I'm disappointed in the choice. But, Obama is not qualified to be the President. Which is worse?

Okay, I just read a few more comments, and the attitude some people have to universal healthcare amazes me. Although, if what people are saying about Canada's system is true, then I wouldn't want that, either. To 988. Michelle - maybe some of the healthcare options in many countries isn't working, but I'd still prefer universal healthcare to none.
Here in Australia, we have Medicare. Many people complain about Medicare, but some people just like to complain. Here's a little bit about how it works. Everyone has a Medicare card. Everyone is entitled to Medicare. If you're a high income family, you're expected to also have private health insurance. Not instead of Medicare, but in addition to Medicare. I'll say it again, *Everyone* is entitled to Medicare. If you have private health insurance, there are some perks, such as being covered for private hospitals, quicker surgeries etc. If you're a high income family, and you choose not to have private health insurance, you won't be denied Medicare, you'll just get an extra tax slug.
My daughter is fully immunised, it has never cost me a cent, it's all under medicare. I see the family doctor of my choice, whenever I like for free, under medicare. I've been seeing the same doctor for about 17 years, all for free. My mum has been seeing him for that long, too. Sometimes she needs to see him several times a week. All free. X rays and ultrasounds? Free. Blood tests? Free.
Prescription medications in Australia are subsidised by the government under the universal healthcare scheme. I've never had a prescription that cost me more than $30. For pensioners and other welfare recipients, they're subsidised even further. Last time I checked with Mum, she was paying around $3.60 per prescription. That's not a typo, $3.60. Some new and/or experimental prescriptions are not covered, but the *vast* majority are.
In addition to all of that, 5 years ago, my husband was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. We did not have to wait for any treatments, we saw doctors immediately, and his chemotherapy was started within 2 weeks of his final diagnosis. From seeing the first doctor, through all the tests, (MRI, CAT scans, ultrasounds, X-Rays, PET scans, Gallium scans, Bone marrow biopsy) to final diagnosis? About 3 weeks. And I'm really, really sorry for your Dad, 996. Murphy, because that's just ridiculous.
The total out of pocket expenses for my husbands treatment? $650. That's for *all* the tests, *all* the doctors visits, *all* the chemo treatments, medications, every single tiny little thing. Six Hundred and Fifty Dollars. Total. Admittedly, there are waiting lists for surgery at some hospitals, but I've never had to wait more than three months, and in life threatening cases, such as my husbands, there is no wait at all. And if you don't want to wait, you can pay the extra and go private.
No-one will ever convince me that universal healthcare is not fabulous, because the last thing I would have wanted (or been able to cope with) when my husband was so desperately ill, was the worry of having to pay for it all.

Ummm...I don't think that anyone really thinks that, if elected, the day after he's sworn in that rainbows are going to appear all over the country and people will all have perfect homes and good schools for their kids, and everyone will be insured. No one thinks that Obama, single-handedly, is going to unite the entire nation and provide for everyone. We're not idiots. In fact, most of us are jaded and cynical and wary of any promises. My whole thins has been, and likely will always be, that if someone is at least making the effort to sound hopeful, and has proven to give a shit about people in need, and has worked across party lines to try to bring about change, and who has MADE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES in the communities where he's worked, he has helped to improve lives and communities, and guess what? That matters to me!
No, he's not the Messiah. No, he isn't going to overturn everything and make it go totally along the liberal agenda. Guess what? He can't. No one person can. But he is hopeful, and has always been. He works hard for change, and always has. And that matters.

Attacks, praise stretch truth at GOP convention
By JIM KUHNHENN, Associated Press Writer Jim Kuhnhenn, Associated Press Writer – Wed Sep 3, 11:48 pm ET

PALIN: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending ... and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "bridge to nowhere."

PALIN: "There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform — not even in the state senate."

THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

PALIN: "The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars."

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.

He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.

MCCAIN: "She's been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America's energy supply ... She's responsible for 20 percent of the nation's energy supply. I'm entertained by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America," he said in an interview with ABC News' Charles Gibson.

THE FACTS: McCain's phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she's no more "responsible" for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could as easily have called it the 47th largest state — by population.

MCCAIN: "She's the commander of the Alaska National Guard. ... She has been in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities," he said on ABC.

THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service. When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they assume those duties under "federal status," which means they report to the Defense Department, not their governors. Alaska's national guard units have a total of about 4,200 personnel, among the smallest of state guard organizations.

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin "got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOV. MITT ROMNEY: "We need change, all right — change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington! We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington — throw out the big-government liberals, and elect John McCain and Sarah Palin."

THE FACTS: A Back-to-the-Future moment. George W. Bush, a conservative Republican, has been president for nearly eight years. And until last year, Republicans controlled Congress. Only since January 2007 have Democrats have been in charge of the House and Senate.

Thank you for summing up how so much of us feel. It's not about being a Democrat or Republican or any other party for that fact. It's about the opportunity to allow everyone in our country the opportunities to succeed and to bring our country back to a place that makes something and has a strong middle class. That means when people are having a hard time, their government is there to help them. Unfortunately there are people that take advantage of the system, but there are so many more that want a chance.

My parents used food stamps when I was young when they were both layed off from their factory jobs. The continued working odd jobs and held on to their homes. We have a civic duty to bring up the whole country and just bettering the few fortunate.

We should be ashamed to not offer world class healthcare, ashamed. A family should not go bankrupt because someone gets sick.

Maybe neither candidate is your ideal, but there is one that wants to try and make a change and not offer the same old song and dance. It's time to get corporate ownership out of government and to let religion stay where it should, within our homes. No one's religion should determine my rights. I'm sick of the spin coming from the republicans and sick of the apathy and acceptance. Everyone needs to get out and vote. Even if it's not what I agree with, just do it. Especially to all those moderates out there that don't think they can make a difference.

You can't make a difference unless you are willing to accept change the the faults that have happened in the past.

Oh and end this damn war. To many of our brothers, sisters, and fathers have been killed or maimed. Let us create a country that we can be proud of.

Okay, I have to comment again.

I am a thinking person. Certainly, I don't think that all Republicans/conservatives are evil. Of course not.

What does strike me as a common denominator in my conservative friends and family members (and in many of the commenters here) is the lack of ability or willingness to look outside of themselves. They seem to assume that their story is THE STORY.

"My family was poor and made it without help, so yours should, too!"
"I haven't experienced discrimination, so discrimination does not exist!"
"I'm not gay, so being gay must be a choice!"

Then one day, their gay son comes out to them and all of a sudden they realize, "Oh, I have 3 other children and none of them are gay. We didn't raise our gay son any differently than our other children and yet he still turned out gay. Maybe it's not a choice? And weird, he's actually still the same person and still a good person even though he's gay." The lightbulb goes off, hopefully, and their thoughts on gay issues are changed.

Just using that common scenario as an example.

We're all different and we all have a million variables in our lives that make us who we are. It just seems to me that Republicans/conservatives need a personal experience with each of these important issues in order to open their minds to those different lives whereas Democrats/liberals approach the issues with more of an open mind.

Dare I mention Jeremiah Wright, the man who married Barry and Michelle, baptized their children and got credit in Obama's memoirs for being a great influence? He has mastered the art of smooth talk and wooing the bleeding hearts. And then he picks a professional politician as a running mate. Yeah, there's change for ya.

I completely disagree with your opinions but I DO applaud you for eloquently stating them. Too many people do not take the time to listen to and study current issues. We live in a "soundbite" nation and the fact that you have taken the time to form your own opinions is more than most people ever bother with. These are my opinions:
    - The smaller the government the better, what has the government ever improved by getting itself involved?
    - The poor should definitely have help covering basic needs and this includes healthcare. It is my experience that most children that fall in the "poverty zone" do have access to medicaid. Perfect? No but a start.
    - Ease up on me with taxes and government regulations and I am going to create businesses and jobs. Americans are smart, industrious, and hard working just get out of our way!
    - Pallin has more experience than Obama and quite honestly the reason why the Dems are so angry with her is because they see her for what she is: tough, smart and a capable leader. I will proudly vote for her-unfortunately they are a package deal so I guess I have to vote for HIM to get her.

Keep up your writing and wit, I love it! I will never agree with you politically but the last time I checked that is what made this country great. Americans are loud and opinionated and after living all over the world I wouldn't trade this country for anything. Heather

The problem is partisan politics - it leads to mudslinging and anger and refusal to even listen to other opinions! If there weren't labels perhaps we could actually listen to what the candidate has to say. McCain is pandering to hard-core conservatives, even though that isn't what he proclaims himself to be, which kind of ticks me off; and Obama throws out a lot of great-sounding ideas, but he never gets to the root of the issues because he can easily fall back on that big, capital D after his name and what it stands for - it fills in the holes, so he thinks.

No party has all the answers. I seriously doubt that any of us can say we agree with absolutely everything "our party" has to say on all issues.

Frustration and name-calling isn't the answer, and until Americans wake up and get THAT we'll never get anywhere - regardless of who's in office.

And where the hell is her foreign policy is she's only been out of the country 3 times??

I agree totally. 19 years ago I had an unplanned pregnancy at age 17 and had my baby when I was a senior in high school. I naively thought I would receive government support while I attended college. I received $231.oo a month from welfare (exact same amount is still given for 1 child today)- which left me dependent upon my abusive boyfriend for help making ends meet. I went to a prolife agency for help with diapers once and they made me watch a graphic video showing an aborted fetus before they would give them to me. "Yeah- you're making me watch a video about abortion before I can have diapers for my baby that I obviously gave birth to" anyway- the entire experience of raising a child by myself and having to navigate "the system" for help made me choose social work as a profession. I was on welfare during the school year but then every summer I got a job. I graduated and got a job within 2 weeks and have never been on welfare since then. I now have my master's degree in social work and I am so grateful for the help I did receive. I'm able to pay taxes- and I think I've paid back way more than I ever took from the system. I wish I could sit down with a conservative and ask "If you're against abortion, then I hope you'll support programs that help women raise their children- like welfare, Wic, food stamps, medicaid, etc. That issue boggles my mind!!! Thanks for letting me rant & rave....

The part about the taxes thing that KILLS ME though is that if people actually took the freakin' time to look at a NON-PARTISAN ANALYSIS of Obama's and McCain's proposed tax plans, they would see that Obama's plan is almost definitely either "better" for them (as far as having lower taxes goes), or within a FEW DOLLARS A YEAR. And those uber-rich people, who look like they're getting screwed by Obama's plan? That's just putting them back at the tax rate they had when Clinton was President.

The Washington Post made a nice picture (people like the pictures, right?) http://tinyurl.com/5s4l7j of the Tax Policy Center's results.

But people STILL SEEM TO THINK that Republican's lower taxes and Democrats raise them.

    ARG!!!!

Actually, the rejection of paying money to people who don't DO SOMETHING FOR IT BY TRYING TO BETTER THEIR OWN SITUATION is one of the incredibly few things I AGREE with the Republitards on.

Don't give me this bullshit they can't, don't give me this bullshit they're being held back by government or society.

Welfare should be workfare. The streets are filthy, clean them and I'll feel better about my hard earned money going to others. Just because I'm working hard doesn't mean someone else doesn't have to.

You are right on. I think Sarah Palin was chosen simply because she's a woman and McCain and his fellow Republicans felt they needed to avoid having two white guys on the ticket. Period. For whatever reason, they think Palin is the right option for them. They think she's somehow going to make McCain more attractive to the independent voters who are, at a minimum, interested in a little diversity. While she's a great speaker, her speech made me sick to my stomach. While I'm not thrilled with McCain, I started to listen to her speech because it was a somewhat historic moment (first female Republican candidate -- welcome to the 21st century guys) but she made me sick to my stomach. The AP article was right on. To be honest, I wasn't going to vote for McCain but I really believe that if I had been considering him at all, I would have changed my mind simply because of Palin.

I am not sure anyone can muddle through our broken political system but Obama is the first person ever to give me any hope and so I'll vote for him.

I wish I could remember specifics, but there was an episode of the West Wing where Pres. Barlett gets chastized for using big words in a speech (as to not be seen as talking down to voters). He defends himself by saying that questioning the intelligence of the American people is what should be criticized, and that it is the job of the president to be smarter than the public anyway.

This is reason #1 I am voting Obama. Having an Ivy league education that HE PAID FOR WITH STUDENT LOANS and got in by EARNING IT, doesn't make him elitist, it makes him intelligent. Having a degree in constitutional law makes him more prepared for the executive office than most. (Though I still take issue with his compromise on FISA.)

And the ragging on his past as a community organizer? MLK, Susan B. Anthony, Mother Teresa, etc., all changed the world as we know it with their grassroots community involvement.

Finally, a modest plea: ENOUGH!!!! to the Repubs that keep repeating 'Messiah,' 'The One,' and the like to describe how Dems support Obama. HE IS OUR CANDIDATE. WE SUPPORT HIM. You are not kidding anyone by trying to allude that he is some anti-religious, Christ-like figure to the ever-secular Dems.

    Love to all,

As an Australian who has lived in the US, I agree with your sentiments, particularly the second last paragraph. We, the rest of the world, are laughing (whilst clenching our buttock cheeks) at the cock up that the US is making.

The "Land of Opportunity" has become a land of poverty on the homefront and arrogance on the global front.

Meg: (post 123) "And honestly, while I respect everyone's opinions, its our election, and I don't care who Canadians or Australians hope to win. They don't vote here." It's this kind of opinion that makes us call American's ignorant. It IS a global issue. The rest of the world CARES about our whole planet. (well, we kind of have to when a war-starting US president threatens "You're either with us or against us")

Elizabeth: (post 106) "Go live in one of the third world countries and I guarantee you will get help from America, because trust me, we aren't billions in debt by giving back to our own people, as you all complain about. We're in debt due to different reasons, but one of the main ones being that we help our foreign allies and less fortunate countries" The US gave the smallest amount per capita to the victims of the Tsunamis, the Chinese Earthquakes, and even to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The rest of the world helps America with charity much more than she helps the rest of the world. Oh, unless you call murdering innocent civilians in an effort to destroy weapons of mass destruction (*h-hmm*) HELPING.

Anonymous: (post 123) "Oh, poor people, they are sick, they don't have a house, they don't have a job. Oh, poor, poor, people. FUCK THEM." Which is why the rest of the world dislikes America. With an attitude like that on the home front, how on earth can you display empathy towards foreigners? And unfortunately, your opinion is the one that the rest of the world hears. Lovely.

DJK: (post 173) "Obama's a communist". LOL. (thanks for the chuckle in an otherwise gut-wrenching read)

I'm sorry, but I have to add one more thing. Don't just look towards Canada for a socialized health care system. Look to the UK. Look to Australia (although ours has become much more privatised due to our GWB-loving previous Prime Minister). They WORK. I could not live in a country which would deny me emergency health care based upon my ability to generate income. That is just plain wrong.

The UK all but got rid of their outdated class system, and your government has instated it well and truly in your country. Oh, you can't be racist anymore, but you can be "poor-ist". And anyone who believes that they couldn't be put in poverty by divorce, death or illness needs to think again.

    Sorry for the long rant.

    Thanks Heather. You really rock.

I paid for my education as well but I also knew what the school paid. For instance let's say you attended UC Berkeley a few years back. They charged you about $7K per year. But the real cost is closer to 15K and that is picked up by, guess who, the taxpayers in CA. Went to school in another state - give them a call to find out how much the taxpayers there helped you out. Went to a private school? Thank the many many donors.

Thank you, Heather, for coming out and saying your piece. I was for some reason thinking you might be proRepublican and thankfully that is not the case. I can only hope after voting and praying for the past eight years that people would wake up and see what is happening in and to our world, that they will vote for the right people who are looking out for the greater good of everyone - Obama and the Dems. I just said to my husband during Palin's speech that despite this whole political circus being so divisive, that you just can't help wishing everyone would just come together because as Americans we generally want the same big things in our lives: a happy healthy family, a decent job, care for the elderly (well maybe they don't want that, good schools. But when statements are made to drill, drill drill (what about our beautiful world and the future of it for our children) and talk about making the government smaller (i.e. cutting social services to poor, elderly, children) I just can't buy the Republican way and I doubt I ever will. Sorry to be so long here but I am passionate about this too and too often don't speak to anyone about it after being so beat down by the "we are running the world, holier than thou GOPers for so many years. I know the far right is not the majority in America - we come together and make a change now for us all and for the future of our children...which means choices and options for everyone, not just a few. We too paid COBRA for two years, nearly bankrupting ourselves to keep insurance when my husband lost his aerospace job. We are college educated, professional, normally middle class, intact family. We have been made to be the working poor by policies of recent years. We need insurance for all. Thank you for letting me speak.

Hey, thanks for the Palin info by AP link. Ironically I had been sorta following her before she was nominated. One of the baby-killing blogs I read was tracking the whole "Troopergate" story so I was looking at the name when it was announced going, "Gee that name is familiar and I'm not thinking about Michael Palin"

Look, I HAVE a college degree and I've been unemployed before between quiting grad school and finding a bad job, and then leaving the bad job and finding the hellish but much better job. And every instance was an attempt to stave off or deal with major depression. If paying more taxes means that someone who is having a hard time won't go bankrupt because they have an accident, have mental issues or get cancer or something because we'll have universal healthcare then I'm all for it. That person could be anybody. Me, you, your neighbor, your cousin ... ANYBODY.

If paying more taxes mean that our servicemen and women get the mental healthcare they need I will gladly do so.

And denigrating community organizers (ie the people who really get shit done when it needs to get done. Like say those faith based soup kitchens the Republicans have been so hot about for the last 8 years) is not only stupid, it belies the elitist power structure that currently exists in the Republican party where only a few can eat at the table and the rest must hope for scraps to be dropped.

So right on sister. I totally GROK your frustration and anger with your loved ones insistence on being delusional about who benefits from Republican policies and who suffers. Jesus Christ wouldn't vote Republican.

I provide insurance for 734 people at a cost much greater than $300 per person, and it is total BS that you can't find insurance for Leta, you're just not looking hard enough. I have 3 employees who's children have the same condition from the "back to sleep" campaign. I gladly pay the $1043 a month per child to provide insurance for them. Maybe if you cut back on gallivanting around the country drinking yourself into a stupor you could afford proper insurance for your daughter.

But you go ahead and vote for Obama so he can raise my taxes. I am a small business owner who's company makes more than $250,000, not brings home more, but grosses more. I want to fly you, who brings home an estimated $40,000 a month (yes, we poor hicks without a college degree can read the WSJ) to Kansas where you can tell the 11 employees that I will have to layoff why you think that they should have gone to college so they could be smart like you and offer them the welfare you think is so great. Where do you think the money will come from? I can't raise my prices enough to cover what Barry says he will take. I am terrified. I don't sleep at night. The 41 people who rely and me and the salary and insurance I provide them plead to me in my dreams not to layoff their mommy or daddy.
