"... drawings and paintings that depict animals isolated in fragments of their natural environment, overrun with shards of man-made artifice and debris." Surreal, a little unnerving, and at times very tender. Lots of good stuff to see in here.

OH MY GOD IT'S HAPPENING. PEOPLE ARE MARRYING ANIMALS. Proof that all hell breaks loose when you give the gays their gay. (thanks, Sarah of Salisbury)

Monday, 12 November 2007

Radiohead played a live webcast last Friday, featuring some of their new songs, a few covers, and some DJ sets. This is a brilliant use of what is going on right now with the Internet, and I think this is made extra special by the fact that you can tell they are having so much fun. My favorite part of the program is when they cover "Headmaster Ritual" by the Smiths. Just bone chilling. (other coverage can be seen here)

Monday, 29 October 2007

No really, seriously? You haven't downloaded it yet? Because I love it more than their last one, more than anything I've heard this year, except for maybe Wilco. BUT IT'S DANGEROUSLY CLOSE. It's all I'm listening to right now. You should really go have yourself a listen. And then another one. And another.

I get the feeling that some people think this is exactly the kind of parent I am. And they would be so, so correct.

"I didn't think she was overreacting to the fate of her dog, I thought she was expressing anger and frustration at people who preferred to enforce their rigid policies in a situation that clearly called for flexibility and compassion." Sadly, we had a similar experience in Los Angeles when trying to adopt a dog. (thanks, sweetie)

Local news strikes again.

Wednesday, 17 October 2007

"L.A. is the apocalypse: it's you and a bunch of parking lots. No one's going to save you; no one's looking out for you. It's the only city I know where that's the explicit premise of living there – that's the deal you make when you move to L.A. The city, ironically, is emotionally authentic. It says: no one loves you; you're the least important person in the room; get over it." I haven't ever heard someone sum up LA so accurately. This is exactly what it's like to live there, and why I love it so dearly. (via Kottke)

Tuesday, 16 October 2007

"Since we’d more or less eloped years before, this was our nearest-and-dearest’s chance to watch us tie the same knot they missed us tying the first time. 'Laid' was the track Jen chose to walk down the aisle to (don’t ask) and whenever I hear it, I remember how beautiful she looked that day. And because of that, this song always gives me a boner." Such a great piece. (via Kottke)

"Last month a woman nursing her child was asked to leave the plane after she refused to hide under a blanket. She claims [that] none of her breast was showing. As we know, he’s watching us all, especially those of us at an increased altitude."
