That picture just creeps me out.

    Very, very cool though.

    Snow!

I wish we had that much snow. In St. Louis it's rarely that fluffy.

How I miss the snow... Moving from Jersey to Georgia has made me realize how much I do miss it... Wait-- did I really just say that?

  • 10. Meekazan said:

oops... the game, it sucked me in, and yet I failed. I resisted sooo long.

  • 11. august95 said:

Yikes. I will keep my rain.

  • 12. heathabee said:

    beeeautiful!

i like that kind of snow when I'm inside, not walking in it!

Does Leta like the snow? Has she played in it yet?

  • 13. Mary said:

Pretty. Like a princess. Maybe even prettier.

  • 14. becky said:

i wasn't sure what that was from the thumbnail. afraid to guess.

love snowy mornings - as long as i don't have to be out in them!

  • 15. lady said:

The mini picture looked like a decaying molar.

  • 16. trudie said:

remind me again why we moved back to sc, the land of NO SNOW, from pa? just a note for later--sand toys are awesome in the snow for digging, shaping and whatever, but they are also brightly colored and nearly impossible to loose!

  • 17. kEma said:

Damn, wish he had snow too. LUCKY you

  • 18. Em said:

SNOW! That's serious. Hope you are all keeping warm and dry...

  • 19. Sasha said:

    Wow! Gorgeous picture.

  • 20. John said:

What is wrong with you people? Snow can be quite beautiful, yes--but it's something to visit, not live with. That's why I'm moving back to the California Central Coast as soon as I finish grad school back here in central Pa.

  • 21. Carrs said:

if you ever get chuck to stop licking the couch, can post how you did it?

  • 22. Angie said:

I live on the south coast of England - if we had that much snow everything would come to a stand still!! No one would go to work or school and the government would probably have to announce a state of national emergency.
    We are wimps.

  • 23. Brian said:

Really nice looking shot! I know that by the end of the day I'm sure to see snow covered bushes too.
But Im with Becky, Im all for waking up to a snow blanketed world, just as long as I dont have to deal with it. :-D

[btw... woot for the top 25

  • 24. sweetney said:

lovely! how much snow have you gotten thus far this winter? baltimore's been snowless...methinks this some kind of cosmic compensation for the high murder rate and failing economy.

baltimore: you might get shot or live in squalor, but the weather's FINE. huzzah!

  • 25. Bucky Four-Eyes said:

All you people who are jealous of the snow are welcome to come shovel the "white pestilence from the sky" out of my driveway. Feh! Once it gets too cold to run naked through the front yard, my year is essentially ruined. Uh, but the neighbors are elated.

  • 26. BarefootGoddess said:

It's pretty to look at, but makes me happy for our 70 degrees, even if it is raining.

  • 27. John said:

"white pestilence from the sky" -- i like that

  • 28. karinka said:

It looks like a cotton plant.

  • 29. beachgal said:

How pretty! I'm one of the transplanted PA folks down here in SC and lemme tell, I DON'T MISS SNOW!!!! Not one little bit. I do think it can be pretty, but I don't want none 'round here.

  • 30. David said:

Either sunshine or snow please. It's the bits inbetween that are yucky.
I'm English and I think I've just found out the reason why I left the country...

  • 31. annelise said:

sure, it looks pretty now, but wait until february...

  • 32. Shmee said:

That is a stunning shot. The thumbnail made me think of blubber, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Here in Ottawa, Canada, we had a snowfall like that a few days ago, but it just doesn't look the same when it's not fresh. Today, we are enjoying -18 degree celsius weather (which I think is just below 0 degrees fahrenheit). It's going to take something momentous to get my ass out of the house.

  • 33. Melanie S said:

Damn all of you to hell with your snow, and the flaunting of the snow. I'm in Dallas and it's going to be 70 friggin' degrees today. Last week we had Ice on our cars everyday. Stupid snow flaunters!

  • 34. annelise said:

shmee - hey, i'm in montreal and not much snow yet, but damn it's cold here! nothing pretty like that bush...

  • 35. Chris From Ohio said:

    Hey, look! A crack tree!

  • 37. tracie said:

I'm in Texas also (outside of Waco) and snow like that would close the schools and give me a day off of work...it's raining here- it's going to be 68 today.

    Beautiful picture

  • 38. kim said:

even though it's really pretty 'n all i'm glad we haven't gotten any snow yet. snow sucks when you have to ride your bike to work. but only four more days at work for me and then i'm on my way over the big water to the midwest and it'd be nice to have a white christmas in IN/OH this year ;o) happy nikolaus to you all..

  • 39. beachgal said:

Oh, my guess from the thumbnail? Another ceramic atrocity.

  • 40. TracyDee said:

I'm jealous... all we get is rain. Rain, rain, rain. More rain coming tonight.

  • 41. Kieran said:

I am not ready for snow just yet! Nothing is worse then walking in manhattan in a foot of snow!

  • 42. meilaan said:

    *another Texan boggles*

  • 43. JulieT said:

Dooce, Hope you're back home safe and sound. : )

  • 44. LadyBug said:

That picture kind of creeps me out. It looks so soulless.

I'm in small town Texas. If we get snow or freezing rain or any hint thereof, it's State Law that everyone must, in one panic-induced mob, storm the local stores and buy canned goods, flashlights and batteries. Then we all drive like idiots...some of us at 5 mph and others at 50. (No one in Texas knows how to drive on slick pavement.) Then we hole up in our houses and pray for the second coming. We Texans are fun that way.

  • 45. laura said:

what beautiful snow. we rarely get snow here in dublin. sometimes i wish i didn't live in a maritime climate. no extremes. neither of cold nor of heat.

  • 46. James said:

I really enjoy the contrast in that pic. Thank you for sharing it.

  • 47. ill said:

Nice picture. I also wanted to make sure you know about this new form of dog torture I discovered over the weekend. Put trouser socks on all of your dog's stinky feet. I'm sure many people have done this before, but I was amazed at how entertaining it was!! I also like to put a sock on her snout, but she pulls it right off.

  • 48. red said:

goodness. we rarely get snow like that in oklahoma. great shot!

  • 49. ranae said:

i'm jealous of your beautiful snow - i live in the mountains - i should have snow, but alas just drippy drizzle and mud.

what's on your christmas list dooce?

  • 50. pismire said:

That is really beautiful. It has been too warm here in Chicago for anything but rain. And LOTS of it.

  • 51. Rosalie said:

i want snow SO BADLY! this is my favorite time of year. the house is decorated, hot chocolate ready to go, a fire in the fireplace -now send me some goddamned snow!

  • 52. Tabbie said:

I'd like some snow. Sadly Tennessee isn't that cold right now. Yesterday I went out without a coat. IN DECEMBER. I'd rather snow than rain.

  • 53. jenny said:

    gorgeous photo as usual dooce

  • 57. christine. said:

I think you ought to compose a long post compiling all of the "I'm first!" comments. The whole phenomenon has taken on a life of its own and would be a pretty funny read. Or not.

  • 58. christine. said:

    And the photo is beautiful.

You have to check the Mother/Daughter dresses from the ads on main page. The silver diva get-ups at the bottom, a must-have for Dooce and Leta Xmas card picture!

  • 61. Jenny said:

Snow definitely makes for some gorgeous pics (like that one!) ... I can't say I enjoy being around it though. It's 25 degrees up here in Boston and I hear snow is on the way. I'm not really all that happy about it.

  • 66. the niffer said:

Oops, I pissed on the format.
A - that is truly a great photo Dooce.
C - We got a bit of snow today in London; just enough to cause some accidents because people forget how to drive in snow. Tomorrow it's supposed to be 12 degrees C, so bye bye snow.

  • 67. Sheryl said:

Cool figure ground reversal in the thumbnail. Sorry, about the art lingo.

I think the thumbnail is cool because it looks like a crack (absence of matter) but the photo is in fact of a tree branch (matter).

  • 68. the niffer said:

Ooo! Very arty Sheryl! I'm impressed. Say some more art stuff so that I can have new conversations with my husband.

  • 69. Aaron said:

You know, we're all so fortunate to be able to see the snow for ourselves, or even go to the snow. But there are some kids who will never see or play in the snow. Isn't that sad? I don't know how they do it...not seeing the joys of the snow and all. We should create a charitable trust to help them find that joy.

  • 70. Sheryl said:

Niffer, is your hubby an artist?

I was until I had to suddenly be financially independent about 7 years ago.

  • 71. Jamie said:

Beautiful. I have a picture of a dancing Moses in my Photobucket account and the title to your picture reminded me of him =)

  • 72. the niffer said:

He's an artist mostly by hobby, but has found a way to make some money on the side designing icons and whatnot.

I think the thumbnail looks like a molar with a cavity.

  • 79. Heather said:

Hey Dooce, just wondering, when does the party planning for Leta's 1st birthday start? My son, Aidan, turned one on August 29th, and we started at least 4 months in advance. Pretty neurotic huh? Well it's just that family came out of the wood work and all "had" to come. By the way, beautiful picture!

  • 80. Mrs.Stray said:

It is snowing here too!! Just posted the pics.

That thumbnail looks like fat white knuckles or fists pressed together.

  • 81. Toad said:

    That's pretty cool.

  • 82. wendee said:

You can keep the snow! I'm hoping the snow will hold off here in PA till I leave for Florida, for Christmas!

Ok, Dooce, where's George W?? Is he under that shrub-thing with the snow on it?

  • 84. Stephen said:

sweet dude. our snow just melted.

  • 85. shaunacat said:

    Re: Aaron's point..

Don't despair for the children that grow up without snow. I grew up in the midwest, so I'm no stranger to it - but I moved to south TX and married a native.

The first time I took him to see snow, he checked it out for awhile and then came in the house to exclaim 'get me the fuck out of here! It's COLD!'

The native southerners aren't missing a damn thing, for sure. ;o)

  • 86. LadyBug said:

Unrelated to the photo, but totally related to all things Dooce...

You won't believe what I just read at News of the Weird (www.newsoftheweird.com):

"Archaeologists excitedly announced in October that in examining ruins on the Wittenberg, Germany, property of 16th-century philosopher Martin Luther, they discovered the actual stone toilet on which he composed the manifesto that launched the Protestant Revolution. (Luther suffered chronic constipation and thus spent much of his days on the toilet.)"

Who knew constipation played such an integral role in the Protestant Revolution?

  • 90. jm said:

oh! like the snow of my childhood.

Man, it rarely snows like that around anymore. I have no excuse to use my snowshoes to make a run for Starbucks.

  • 91. Dr. Johnny Fever said:

    That bush must be freezing!

  • 92. Cajun Country said:

Um, yeah. So as we speak my a/c is set at 72. It's 75 outside right now with 83% humidity. I sent my kids to school in shorts this morning.

  • 93. Shiz said:

    Cold, white, heartless bush.

  • 94. Mrs.Stray said:

The only thing that would make that bush better is if it were in a box.

  • 95. SnowBelle said:

Hey...look closely. Is that an image of the Virgin Mary in the bush? It's odd how I contemplate these things as I am munching down my grilled cheese.

  • 96. mns said:

Good choices, Sheryl, but you forgot one:

    G. GEORGE!

    "Sheryl said at 08:47AM, 12.05.2004:

I was thinking maybe we should have a multiple choice feedback form:
    A. I love your __.
    B. I have a similar baby, family, dog story.
    C. Insert assinine but potentially funny comment."

  • 97. Chrisi said:

Hmm, interesting picture. I thought the mini-image looked like a stuffed Tigger giving a kiss to another stuffed animal. Guess I need to get out more.

  • 98. kristine said:

That bush needs a nice warm box.

  • 99. Sheryl said:

Yes, mns - I think Danielle suggested we also have a category
    D. for Requests

(And for those who didn't see this post - assinine was referring to moi.)

I like to say I put the 's' in assinine.

I'm just excited that Dooce put "Christmas-y" stuff in her new masthead, because we all know what that means: a NEW masthead after the holidays pass in a few weeks!!! Wooohooo! Methinks she should consider something with the other two favorite subjects in her life: Jon and Leta. She's already had Chuck, a poop-related masthead, cowbells, etc. Time for Leta, or maybe GEORGE!, or perhaps even a tribute to the Avon World Sales Leader. Maybe a snub to the "No Parking Neighbors" or the "Really Creepy Cool Realtor." Who knows where this could go next!!! ;-)

  • 110. wealhtheow said:

    Dooce--
    I love your bush.

  • 111. Lisa said:

I'd love to see a pic of the Avon World Sales leader on a masthead, she reminds me of my own dear mother who used to sell Mary Kay cosmetics faster than a drug dealer could sell crack.

    Whoo hooo!!

  • 114. kristine said:

    Sarcastic Journalist-

How did you get that shot of you from your old blog? and HOW in the hell could you look so good in a hospital gown?
I looked like I was about to hurl the whole time. My sister nicely put it when she saw me with the mask on my face trying to get more air, "GOOSE! GOOSE! I'm going down!!"
    (my only Top Gun reference...ever.)

Thank God no one had digital cameras in the room when I was giving birth. My sister was a good wing man that day.

  • 115. Chloe said:

I guess it's just me, but I thought the thumbnail looked like a close-up black and white shot of a hand holding some sticks or herbs. Now, go scan up *real* quick and look at it. Do you see it, or am I fucking crazy? (Not that the two are mutually exclusive [hee! I love that term].)
I think it's a purty picture. And I am desperately fighting the urge to make any bad "bush" jokes. Two different subjects of jokes... and I have a real bad one just aching to come out.
Okay, you twisted my arm. Maybe just one.
Too bad we can't really burn Bush, eh? HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAA. Sorry. That was lame. And not funny. Je regrette.

  • 116. Sarcastic Journalist said:

hi kristine-- my hubby is 6'4 and was perched on a chair over my bed. as for looking good? glad you thought so but i definately didn't look too good about 1 hour later. :)

  • 117. kristine said:

    Sarcastic Journalist-

That's an awesome picture. I was digging through my old pictures the other day and found one of me pregnant with my last child and thought, "Oh thank you lord for hooking me up with a guy who's fixed!"

  • 125. Karen said:

So, when Leta was screaming just for screaming's sake, and you finally had enough, and yelled, "SHUUUUUUUUUT UUUUUUPPPPPPP!!!" ...

    Mine did.

  • 126. Kelley said:

  • 128. Sheryl said:

These are my favorite pictures of Leta yet! The first one - and the one of her in the dark jersey smiling to someone off camera. The unbridled charm.

Charm enough to make my knees wobble. And I am not a commenter on pictures of Leta. So this comment is category A all the way.

    A. I love your _baby_girl_.

  • 129. maryse said:

it's hard to believe she screams like a banshee when you show us such beautiful happy pictures of her wonderful face. surely you exagerrate. just kidding.

  • 130. Jenny Mahler said:

Your honest stories about motherhood with Leta make me want a baby - and I've NEVER WANTED BABIES. Yes, despite the screaming and grocery store horror, it sounds like the good parts make it so incredibly wonderful.

  • 131. Chloe said:

When Leta is thirteen, and even worse than she is now, just remind her that you once published close-ups of her (baby!) thighs on the internet and that you can do it again. Of course, maybe she'll just scream.

By the way, I love today's picture. I have never seen real snow.

When I worked as a daycare teacher, a Sub in the room with me did a write-up for my Personnel file.
The reason being that as I was struggling to put a recalcitrant 10 month old into the swing, I told him "Your co-operation is anticipated and appreciated"
This was perceived as Verbal Abuse.
Be glad you are a stay-at-home mom, grocery store scenes not-withstanding.

  • 139. Laurie G. said:

Mrs. DoF, if THAT's verbal abuse, Social Services would live at my house. You should see the looks I get when people hear me tell my kids, "I don't really care what you want" or (to my daughter, who hates to go to watch her brother's karate lesson)"Well, nobody WANTS to go to karate, but we have to, and that's that."

  • 140. Super Turtle Girl said:

dooce- I know I am repeating what you have heard many times, but you take beautiful pictures. Especially of your daughter (and of bushes). I think your camera knows how much you love Leta and it comes out in those pictures.

  • 142. Dr. Johnny Fever said:

My favorite picture is the mohawk in the sink. So fitting!!

It sounds like Leta is becoming a little person and that is so wonderful. You sound like me and all the moms I know. Don't think you're doing anything wrong or anything mothers have not done before. You are a great mom. And Leta is a beautiful, sweet, wild little girl. Perfect!

OMFG! The Picture of Leta With "The Curl" is the most sweetest thing I have seen ever! I don't usually gush over babies that are not from people I am related to. I am just not like that. That was an amazing picture and the best yet. God she is just tooooo cute.

MrsDoF: Yeh, I got written up today for daring to suggest that the principal's comments had nothing to do with the topic at hand. There were so many factual errors in the writeup itself that I could only laugh.

Cool shot. But I'm not missing the snow. And Leta is a total cutie pie.

  • 154. Amber said:

I love the snow so much. And I love how in the background it looks like there is ice covering the branches in a crystalized form.

Your daughter is so cute, too.

    sigh.

    Love in Christ,
    Amber <><

I've never commented before - but LOVE your monthly letters to Leta. I'm the mother of a 7-year old boy with Type I diabetes, and a 5-year old boy with mild autism. The honesty, love, humor, and integrity (YES integrity!) with which you approach your letters to your daughter move me. Mothering is more difficult than I ever imagined and even more gripping than I ever imagined. I adored (continue to adore) these boys, yet am able to laugh about the obvious craziness. Thank you for your candor... and more than anything, thank you for your love.

So, I'm reading along in the newsletter, and I see the 2nd picture. (I think of it as the hip-girl rapstah) "cute... cute" and I read along and see the 3rd picture and just S T O P.

    and S T A R E

    amazing.

So, I normally don't gush over Leta either but today it is "A" all the way. I love that photo of Leta.

heck, we'll call it A+, just for you. ;)

(didja see how I think the A N N A thing is cool too)

Oh, and the kewpie doll photo brings a smile to my face as well.

  • 157. Danielle said:

BTW when I look at the thumbnail, I see the nose of a bear (the triangle), all tucked up next to his paws and poochy belly.

  • 158. Carol said:

Danielle- I like the bear vision. The most creative yet, I think.

Oh, and thanks, Sheryl, for the art lesson earlier.

I myself thought of a molar. Not so exciting. Obsessed with teeth?

  • 159. Lesley said:

I know so well how kids like only those things that belong to you, are crucial, like keys and wallet and etc. I had an idea but don't know if this would work. But a fake set of keys and a fake wallet with monopoly money in it. You could pull these out first and when she screams immediately hand them to her, then surreptitiously get out the REAL wallet/keys. Leta sounds like she'd be smart enough to catch on and not allow this, but you never know!

  • 160. Caroline said:

I totally thought it was a bear too. And, Dooce, I wish my mom had written me monthly letters like yours; keep it up, she'll love you for it. Well, love you more for it. /Sigh/ I'm in an odd mood today.

Great photo. I like the metaphor of burning when it's snow giving the appearance of flames and the Biblical reference to Moses who prefigured Christ in the Old Testament as a liberator of the people. Wow! All of that in one picture. You go, girl.

    Oh Leta Leta Bo Beeta....

    SO. STINKIN. CUTE.

Heather - you rock. I've written letters to Thomas every month too and it will be such a lovely gift one day.

My mother once gave me my grandmother's antique creamer filled with little notes of things she remembered about my childhood....I bawled. Leta will too hun. You have such a beautiful family. Thank you for sharing with us every day.

    Hugs,
    Karen

I've told my cats their behavior is inappropriate. I think you've got a better chance with Leta.

    Beautiful pictures!

As a mother to 3 I INSIST you learn to say the word NO!!!!!! Something they can grasp, learn in time... Yeah, have heard all the catch phrases I should have used "No XXX, that is NOT APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR and all that. Save it for when they can understand the idea.

NO. Every mother needs this word, heck, I can't imagine life without it!
NO! Do not chew the dogs tail.
NO! No crayons up the nose.
NO! Leave the tv channel as it is.
NO! Do not run your hand through your shitty diaper..
NO! Stop pulling the plug out of the tub... and so on..

And sooner or later you will get to the stage I am at with my 3. NO, because I said SO! ;)

No... it is a GOOD word...

I melted right into a puddle on the floor when I read the ten month newsletter. That baby's smile is one of the best, most heart warming things I've ever seen. (And those legs! With the diaper butt! SO CUTE!)

    Dooce,

It becomes increasingly hard to distinguish which posting is about Chuck and which about Leta. Take for instance the 'How to Annoy Me' about the wet nose and the blow dryer... Chuck or Leta?

  • 176. Sheryl said:

Aaron, I left room for some of *those* in my statement. ;)

  • 177. Danielle said:

Jaap, I thought the wet puppy nose reference was about dooce (herself) kissing Jon.

    this phrase caught my eye:

"you go in to kiss your husband"

ya know Leta just melts my heart. My baby girl turned 9 months on Saturday and I just can't get over how much I am in love with her. Leta is a doll, she looks so smart.. you can almost see the wheels turning in her head "what can I scream about next??"

My mother used the word "unnecessary"when I was a child. She also used "inappropriate", "circumstances", and so on and so forth.

Fast forward to my two year old check up. My doctor was taking blood and had taken quite a few vials only to come back and start poking me, again. According to my mother I shot him a look over my glasses and said, "Under the circumstances I don't think that is entirely neccassary. You have enough blood today, Sir."

So, use whatever words you want to use, Lena will catch on.

Oh, and as crazy as this sounds, this month's newsletter just made me want to hug you. You are an amazing person. Thanks, again, for sharing.

Love that picture! And your newsletters to Leta are inspiring. I have a two year old (well, almost) and a 4.5 year old and I say NO all the time. It is unpleasant at best.

  • 186. SaraJane said:

Dearest Heather - Thank you for the newsletter. It is wonderful. It almost makes me think I could have a child of my own some day. For now Aunt Sara is just fine!
