I think the blue eyed gene is recessive. Something like if one parent has blue eyes, and the other has brown, there is a 1 in 4 chance the baby will have blue eyes. Of course, I learned this in 10th grade biology which I'm still not sure I legitimately passed, so who knows. My regards to Mr. Kniola, God knows he tried.

It's easier to look at grandparents. My dad has blue eyes, my mom green. (mine are blue green). My husband has brown eyes (his moms are brown, his dad's blue).

Our son has my blue green eyes exactly. We have a one and four chance of having a dark eyed baby. Dark eyes are dominant, but in our case, out numbered.

You also have to take into consideration that things like hair, eye and skin color tend to 'blend' so there is no cut and dry blue or brown or green (like my eyes, which are blended).

But the important thing here is THAT IS ONE CUTE BABY!

Actually, it depends on both parents and what *their* parents have, too, to get the actual ratio. If your mom has brown eyes and both her parents have brown eyes, you're passed on a BB from her (B being brown and always dominant.) If your dad has brown eyes and one of his parents had brown eyes, he'd be passing along a Bb to you. Then you'd have BB and Bb, and the combos you can get from that are no blue, but hazel or combination or brown (because there's no bb [blue] possible). However, if your dad has blue eyes from both his parents having blue eyes, you're changed to BB (mom) and bb (dad) and you get 1:4 blue. If your mom's parents had one blue, (and this is actually my exact situation), it's Bb (mom) and bb (dad) and now you have half a shot of having a blue eyed child. Me? I have hazel green-brown, exact same color as my mom's.

My fiance and I somehow share the exact same color, too, though since both of us have a blue eyed parent, we have a 1:4 shot of having a blue eyed child, but most likely we will have a child with the same weird color we share.

    :)

Ok, I might be beating a dead horse here, but...
If you have brown eyes, you can't really tell if your genes are Bb or BB (B being a brown gene, which is dominant over b, the blue gene). That is, unless you have a blue-eyed parent or a blue-eyed child (in which case you must be Bb). If you have blue eyes, then you must have the bb genes.
Now, If both you and your spouse have blue eyes, and you have a brown-eyed child, then something is VERY WRONG. Either someone is screwing the mailman or there was a random mutation.
If one of you has the BB gene (which you can't really tell with any certainty, you can only tell if you are Bb or bb), then ALL of your children will have brown eyes. If one of you has Bb and the other has Bb or bb, then you will get a mix of brown- and blue-eyed children.

That's an awesome photo. I find kids hard to photograph, but you seem to do better.

As for the subtitles on the TV thing... You don't have to be that old, you just have to have lived a wild and crazy life! I'm only 42, and I find a lot of DVDs that have distracting background noises actors with poor diction. I can hear the words, but I can't understand what they said. Too much time in the workshop, cutting the grass, listening to loud music, flying airplanes, and otherwise being around loud noises has destroyed my ability to separate competing sounds effectively.

Be nice to your dad, Heather, he's the only one you've got! Besides, you're following in his hearing footsteps. Just substitute "listening to Leta screaming" for, well, all of my loud noises list above.

Just to interject: blue eyes (and green) ARE recessive. However, it is possible to have blue eyes from two brown-eyed parents or one blue and one brown. The way genes work is that they can be hetero- or homo-geneous in terms of their expression. So, if BB = Brown (homo, dominant) and Bb = Brown (hetero, dominant) and bb = blue (homo, recessive), then you can see how and when you'd have blue eyes.

Two blue-eyed parents will usually make blue or green eyes, but sometimes hazel. 1/4 will have blue (Statistically, not definitely) if both parents have brown. 1/2 will have blue if you have one blue eyed and one brown eyed parent. You see how this works?

Mendel worked this (imperfect) formula out using pea plants.

I was honestly a bit annoyed at the prospect of my baby getting brown eyes, considering we've only heard from him two-three times since I got pregnant and have had 0 support from him.

Actually, even if both grandparents from one side had brown eyes, you still can't tell if you're Bb or BB. If my great grandmother had blue eyes and my great grandfather had brown eyes, and their daughter had brown eyes, she'd be Bb. If she married a brown-eyed man and their kid (my parent)had brown eyes, she could still be Bb. If she married my brown-eyed father, I could still be Bb. Recessive genes can hang around for a long time--just because they're not expressed doesn't mean they aren't present.

The important thing is, genetically speaking, that the odds are Leta's siblings, if she has any, will likely have blue eyes. Again, this is just odds, but with one blue-eyed and one brown-eyed parent, 1 out 4 will be brown-eyed and the rest blue-eyed. Hazel counts as brown, I believe.

I'm a recessive nightmare. Nobody in my family has grey eyes. Both my parents have hazel eyes. I have a blue eyed paternal grandfather, and a blue eyed half-sister on my moms side, so both of my parents are carrying some recessive blue genes...

but how does that turn into grey? Hmm.

Oh, I guess this explains it. Eye color isn't quite as "Set in stone" as our grade 10 biology class would have us think...

"This model explains the inheritance of blue, brown and green eyes but cannot account for gray, hazel or multiple shades of brown, blue, green and gray eyes. It cannot explain how two blue-eyed parents can produce a brown-eyed child or how eye color can change over time. This suggests that there are other genes, yet to be discovered, that determine eye color or that modify the expression of the known eye color genes."

Two brown-eyed Bb parents could have one, two, three, or a dozen blue eyed babies. Although the odds of having a blue eyed (bb) baby is 1/4 for this couple, each child is an independent genetic event. So families with an unexpected excess of blue eyed babies don't have a super-dominant blue eyed allele, they were just lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you feel about blue eyes!). There's no guarantee of getting 3 brown eyed babies for every 1 blue eyed baby, though on average, that will the the observed ratio.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Leta looks like she's been doped with whatever they put the Fisher Price babies on in the commercial that uses "Walking on Sunshine." Those are some happy-ass babies. The Hubby swears they're on baby crack. I was uh, hello. Fisher. Price. Dude. The babies love the Fisher Price.

You're toying with my emotions with the teaser of The Former Senator's costume. You know that Super-Mutt is my boy. I love me some Chuckles. Even when he's not representing or keeping it real ;)

I always thought that brown eyes were dominant...but then i remember my cousin. His father is mexican with brown eyes/brown hair, and my aunt is spanish with brown eyes/brown hair. He however came out with blue eyes/blonde hair, and no my aunt didn't screw the mailman...because it just so happens that his fathers grandmother had blue eyes, and blonde hair. Its just a randomness in the gene pool. Leta looks soo precious...(i want to pinch her cheeks!)

Eye color is controlled by more than one gene, so one specific color isn't really dominant over the others (at least in the normal sense.) Also, people with the dominant trait can still have children with the recessive trait depending on what alleles they have. (Sorry, I'm a TA in a General Bio class... I'll stop talking nerdy now...)

Punching a guy in the nads is about the worst thing you could do to a human being. Women can never understand the pain - you compare childbirth to pulling your lip over your forehead - getting punched in the nads is like sliding down a giant cheesegrater, naked.

I kid you not. The shooting, knife-like pain, even with minor contact spreads through your body, in a pins and needles sort of way, from your abdomen, and into other centres of nervous activity: ie your fingers, cheeks, etc...

Well, espressoblogger, seeing as how the whole process of labor and delivery lasts an average of 15 hours for first-time moms, and the actual "pushing phase" lasts an average of an hour, I doubt you'll get much sympathy with the ladies by comparing being kicked in the 'nads to childbirth.

    Just saying.
