I love this picture. This is one of my favorites so far. I like how the parking meter is sort of out of focus and fuzzy, and the numbers in the background just jump out at you.
In Houston, if someone is taking too many pictures of public buildings, you are considered a terrorist suspect. Personally I didn't know terrorists took pictures of buildings. I saw a cop harrassing a poor Chinese tourist because he was taking pictures of my building.

Yesssss, top 20! Is Heather trying to tell me the Pick 3 numbers for the lottery to night here in TX?

Yes, Katie, terrorists do take pictures and videoes of buildings, which is how they help to map their bombing plots. I am glad that law enforcement are keeping their eyes peeled for these things.
In New York/New Jersey, a big plot was uncovered involving video and photography of the Prudential Building in Newark, NJ along with other major buildings to blow them up. Then, the terrorists had maps of my very own NJ transit bus and rail system on which to jump after they executed their attacks- the very same train I take every morning right through Newark downtown.
That's too bad for the Chinese tourist and kind of stupid of the officer- if he was Arab, however, I would feel sorry for him if he was innocent, but wouldn't feel one bit bad that he was questioned and/or stopped from taking pictures of municipal or public buildings.
This pic looks like the front of my OBGYN's office.

About a year ago, someone was caught on the East coast and believed to have terror ties. In their possession there were several places here in Austin that were on video including some of the dams on the Colorado River that are operated and owned by my former employer. I was still working there at the time.
I actually havent had any issues with Blogger. I know a lot of people who use LiveJournal though as an alternative. But most of the blogs I know of are either Blogger or LiveJournal.
I have to say that I do get suspicious really easily. And if I saw someone in my front yard taking pictures of my condo I would probably be worried. But I think the authorities have to use some common sense. It is like they are targeting all the wrong people.

Minxlj- I'm not suggesting we "judge" Arabs or Muslims prejudicially, I'm only saying that if a particular agency is concerned with searching out suspicious or potentially terroristic activity, it is to the Arabs/Muslims they should look.
I'm sure I don't have to point out the obvious fact that while not all Arabs/Muslims are terrorists, nearly ALL terrorists are Arab/Muslim.
Nobody needs to point out the obvious exceptions such as Tim McVeigh- I am well aware of the Exceptions.

What a ridiculous statment - that "nearly ALL terrorists are Arab/Muslim".
What whitebread backwater are you from?
Lots of people look like they might be Muslim- hispanic, jewish, people of mixed race, native american - and especially when uneducated cops start concentrating on who they "suspect is a muslim".
Lots of surveillance for those "other folks" to have to endure in order to make you feel safe.
Is it my imagination, or are those meters numbered "5545" and "5546"? The numerological significances continue....
As for blogging hosts, I use Typepad. It's not free, but it's cheap. Besides, I don't spend nearly so much money on movies and porn (joke!) as I did before my blogging habit, so it all evens out in the pocketbook.
My boyfriend is Hispanic (chilean and mexican) and people mistake him for an arab for some reason. I agree that there have been terrorists that were Arab, but it is a false statement to say that all terrorists are Arab. What about all the white trash Klan members that kill blacks and gays? They aren't Arab, and THEY are terrorists. Then there are people in just about every country of this world that terrorize others. They can be Asian, or Irish, or Russian, or whatever! It just so happens that our president is focusing on the Arab world right now, which is a shame. I agree we need to protect our borders, and maybe keep a close eye on people coming from certain nations, but we need to watch out for EVERYONE. Not just Arabs.

However, nearly ALL terrorists are muslims and/or Arab, and if you don't believe me, ask an Arab/Muslim- Thankfully, MOST of them are not terrorists and despise the actions of those who are.
I don't care if you LOOK Arab, so does my dark-skinned Italian husband. It would be an inconvience if he were targeted for searches at airports (which he can't be- because of a ridiculous law that says searches have to be random, hence little old ladies gettin' the patdown). Let's please not paint with broad strokes. The folks that Katie mentioned are awful, but let's be clear, they are not terrorists.
Let's not stone Annabelle. I disagree totally with her statement that all terrorists are Arab/Muslim, but I am guessing she meant that all the terrorists we HEAR about are Arab/Muslim. heather, today's post (GOLF!!!!) cracked me up. just wanted to let you know.
We can go back and forth defining the word terrorist. I agree that politics are quite possible a motive, but not necessarily always the case. Timothy McVeigh was a terrorist - no one can argue that. And he is a Non-Arab. Then there was the UniBomber. Non-Arab. Whether or not they were looking for political gain is up for debate, but they were terrorists 100 percent. And they were white men - American white men. And they killed countless innocent women, men and babies.
Terrorism: adj : characteristic of someone who employs terrorism (especially as a political weapon); "terrorist activity"; "terrorist state" n : a radical who employs terror as a political weapon; usually organizes with other terrorists in small cells; often uses religion as a cover for terrorist activities

I agree that having to press '1' for English gets annoying. The other day, I was calling SBC to pay my phone bill and they connected me to the Spanish speaking operator. I kept saying "I DON'T SPEAK SPANISH!" and finally she said "Well, then hang up and call again". I said "HELL NO. I didn't ask for Spanish, so speak to me in English. Obviously you can SPEAK IT!" Holly, again, I appreciate your contributions to the exceptions list, but again, they are exceptions.
Here is an excerpt from an article published not so long ago in a UK newspaper- I will hijack the statements no more after this.
"Innocent religion is now a message of hate"
(Filed: 05/09/2004)
It is a certain fact that not all Muslims are terrorists, but it is equally certain, and exceptionally painful, that almost all terrorists are Muslims.
The hostage-takers of children in Beslan, North Ossetia, were Muslims. The other hostage-takers and subsequent murderers of the Nepalese chefs and workers in Iraq were also Muslims. Those involved in rape and murder in Darfur, Sudan, are Muslims, with other Muslims chosen to be their victims.
Those responsible for the attacks on residential towers in Riyadh and Khobar were Muslims. The two women who crashed two airliners last week were also Muslims.
Bin Laden is a Muslim. The majority of those who manned the suicide bombings against buses, vehicles, schools, houses and buildings, all over the world, were Muslim.
What a pathetic record. What an abominable "achievement". Does all this tell us anything about ourselves, our societies and our culture?
These images, when put together, or taken separately, are shameful and degrading. But let us start with putting an end to a history of denial. Let us acknowledge their reality, instead of denying them and seeking to justify them with sound and fury signifying nothing.
Author information- from the Telegraph- a newspaper in the UK

Jeebus. A hijacker I am not, but this is absurd and I cannot go back to my mind-numbing job without saying my piece. Any sane person who says such things about people on welfare should be beat about the head with the Sense Stick. I grew up on welfare, furnished both by the government and by the LDS church. And hey, guess what! My parents weren't lazy, nor uneducated. In fact, my father has worked harder than anyone I've ever known and he (at 53 years old) has yet to own his own house. You see, kiddies, he's deaf. And while he's capable and intelligent and motivated, it's just too damn much trouble to have a deaf person on your staff. My whole life, people assumed my dad was lazy, or stupid, or both. A computer whiz who lost his wedding ring laying brick for a summer (in the sweltering San Fernando Valley), just to keep us fed. I make no claims that everyone on welfare has a similar sob story. I'm just saying you grow up with a different perception of prejudice, one that has nothing to do with color or ethnicity or religion.
So thanks for your tax dollars. They're the only reason my family survived.
Oy! I've lived in Austin all my life. Never lived anywhere else. I like it, but I get bored here quite frequently. I'm not a college kid anymore and a lot of the entertainment venues here (well most of them) are bars. I sooooo hate going out to a club and fighting 21 year old bimbos whose skirts barely even cover their pootie-poos and shirts barely contain their hoonanies. Plus it's the dumb giggles and drunk shouts and squeals that grate on my ears like a fork against a plate. ARRRRRRRGGGGHH!
Can't I just go someplace and lsten to some good, live music and have a beer or ten without wanting to bash some brainless twit's head in for yelling over the music with her friends? Austin used to be, truly, the live music capital of the world. Not so much anymore. The big LA and NY clubs are coming in and buying the live music venues up and putting in Joe's Generic Dance Club that looks just like every other one around. GRRRRRR.
Ok, I was only going to have one rant today, but I had to get this one out too. My rants are over...I think.
tenderlumping, It's unfortunate that all our media tends to talk about are abuses of the system. Thank you for sharing your story and reminding us of that.
Tender, I highly and honestly doubt any negative reference to welfare or people on it was baout those whom are handicapped and or *truly* need it.
I myself was referring to people who can work but choose not to. People who are second, third, fourth generation welfare recipiants who have no concept or interest in a job.
I come from Northeast PA which has some of the greatest live bands anywhere. And then I got transplanted into Houston, Texas, where you only occasionally see a geriatric Zydeco band or a howling country western singer at the local bar. Then there are the generic clubs that you speak of, Nicole. I just yearn for the days where I sat back and listened to a good band over a beer. Even a cover band would be okay! But none of that around here.
(Muff, have you ever been to the Woodlands in Wilkes-Barre? My friends and I frequented that meat market all the time during college. Good live bands, though).

Because mommy and daddy pay for the world, therefore, the college kids think they own it. It's all about them. Didn't you know that?
We're moving to a better part of town within four months. Let the kids kill themselves from car accidents and alcohol poisoning. I really don't care. Because if you actually confronted the parents about their children's behavior, you'd get "MY Child would NEVER do such a thing. THAT's why I sent them AWAY for college.

They aren't Arab, and THEY are terrorists. Then there are people in just about every country of this world that terrorize others. They can be Asian, or Irish, or Russian, or whatever! It just so happens that our president is focusing on the Arab world right now, which is a shame.
Terrorists are people who choose to strike at innocent and unarmed civilian populations IN ORDER TO TRY TO GAIN POLITICAL ENDS- hence hostage-taking, brokering and bargaining with prisoners, etc- bombings in order to scare civilian populations so much that they would pressure their own governments to change their policies. Let's please not paint with broad strokes. The folks that Katie mentioned are awful, but let's be clear, they are not terrorists.

Holly, again, I appreciate your contributions to the exceptions list, but again, they are exceptions.
"Abdel Rahman al-Rashed" is general manager of Al- Arabiya news channel. Yesterday, his article appeared in the pan-Arabic newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat.

If it don't apply let it fly.

Annabelle, you and me, we're like THIS (not a WORD from you, Pokey!)
I live in a college infiltrated area. The other night, 3 guys are walkign down the street, WOO HOO WOO HOO! at 1 in the morning. Two of the drunk are cheering the other drunk while he KICKS CARS on his inebriated walk down the street. My one friend had his cars quarter panel and fender kicked in. WHY? Because mommy and daddy pay for the world, therefore, the college kids think they own it. It's all about them. Didn't you know that?
We're moving to a better part of town within four months. Let the kids kill themselves from car accidents and alcohol poisoning. I really don't care. Because if you actually confronted the parents about their children's behavior, you'd get "MY Child would NEVER do such a thing. THAT's why I sent them AWAY for college. Because I just love having them around the house SO MUCH!"
Rant 2.

The WOodlands SUCK IT! Always the same. Scantily clad barmaids that won't get you a drink unless you got a dick between your legs and a twenty in your hand, and skeevy looking lounge lizard types hanging out on the fringe of the dance floor, eyeing up my fly booty. No thanks. Ill pass.

As a kid I always thought that the parking meters looked like the eyes of monsters.
Any other takers??

Ahh...Muff...I do remember celebrating the 20th of April as though it were a national holiday.
155. Katie-be-bored-at-work said:
I agree Muffy. I went there in college, remember. It was our only option being that we lived in NEPA and the only other option were tiny hole in the wall bars. Even though the tiny bars usually had the best bands. Anyway, The Woodlands has some CREEPY mo-fo's hanging out there. Ugh.
Haha, you want to talk about skeezy? Ever been to the Shadowbrook in Tunkhannock?
156. Kassi said:
They aren't THE eyes of monsters...no, the actual eyes are somewhere deep beneath the concrete. Parking meters serve as their periscopes...

Seems to be some terrorist comment hijackers here. What happened to commenting about Dooce photo's and life? They were much more enjoyable. Can't you guys take your chat room somewhere else?

That out-of-focus meter looks like some sort of alien robot. I can hear it saying "All your base are belong to us".

Annie, I agree, I got a little extreme today, but again, this message board has clearly been proven to be a place for more than simply commenting on Dooce's photos and life.
165. The Muff said:
Katie: Yea. I worked for Yellow Book and we had a meeting there. I remember getting drunk on the bosses dollar. Not a "college" place though.
I was lucky in that when I was a little girl, I was my dad's "fishin buddy", and we would always go to a bar after a day on the boat. He'd have a few beers and I'd have a few sodas and beef jerkies. We'd play shuffleboard (he would "let" me win and it pissed me off) and he'd bribe me with quarters for the video game machine if I told mom he only had 2 beers (Mom always asked when we got home). So when I was 16, 18, 20, I didn't really feel the need to get a fake ID or sneak into bars.
Funny, I have a strange feeling of deja vu. I think I've posted my feelings on this before.
