I hope the sweetness continued after the photograph. Heh. This happened last night with our son; except as soon as the hug was over, he pushed his litle girlfriend away because she was standing in front of the toy he wanted.
Leta looks absolutely PRECIOUS! The love between those two little friends is so obvious! That picture definitely brightens up an otherwise dismal Monday!
Is that snow in the background? Where are there hats and gloves???
I babysat 4 kids, ages 2 - 6, on Saturday afternoon (as well as my own 8 week old)...it's amazing how soon some lovin between them can erupt into a fight... Thank God for Disney DVD's....altho I am still knackered 48 hours on :-(

Yeah, I can empathize with that, Matt. My 3 1/2 year old loves my sister's baby, but one of the other cousins, age 1 1/2, went creeping up to the baby, arms outstretched as though he were about to hug her. "He said "Hi, Baby!" Just as he got to her side, his little hands grabbed the blanket she was lying on and he tried to pull it out from under her. She was laying on the couch and almost went flying. Luckily I was there and came to the rescue. Just when you think a kid is trying to be sweet, they pull a Houdini act on you. Watch out!
I so badly didn't want to trim my daughter's hair for your same reason. But my husband did it anyway a few weeks ago. I'm so jealous of Leta's pigtails!

I'm ridiculously excited to see Leta with pigtails, most likely because it means I will be seeing the hair doodles I sent her in upcoming pictures? Hhmmmm?
That picture made my Monday. My little niece and nephew are all about the love. Big hugs and blowing kisses to each other goodbye. Leta is quite precious with the pigtails!
Is Leta really giving her a hug, or is she fixing her collar, saying something like "my mom's going to put you on the internet, you have GOT to look put together"?
Happy Valentine Day, everyone!

Too cute! Now that Leta's hair is long enough to put into pigtails, she'll start looking more and more like a sheepdog in the morning before you have a chance to tame the madness that will become her hair ... it's adorable!

Dooce,
I was touched by U2's performance last night, too. I'm a huge U2 fan/dork, so I already knew that the song was dedicated to his father. Seeing him perform it was even more moving than hearing the cd. They sang the song at Bono's father's funeral, too. Also, if you want to see the performance again, it's on u2exit.com.
That last paragraph was like an arrow to the heart. How appropriate for Valentines Day, to examine a girl's first love--her dad-- which is always forever and always complicated.
Wow... Heather... that is a lovely message to your father. Truly. It touched me... and made me wish I had a relationship at all with either of my Dads -- biological or adoptive.
Is it better to never have known your father, or not get along as you would like with the father you have?
Wow, Circus Kelli. You ask the tough questions, don't you? The one you never knew, you can imagine him and make him any way you want him to be. The one you don't get along with, as long as you're both breathing, there's still hope. Things do change. I want to hand you a candy heart with an encouraging message on it. Here . . .

Gah... the sweetness is going to make me cry. Loving the pigtails, but who wouldn't?
I did want to thank you for turning me on to Interpol. If you hadn't mentioned Antics so many times, I never would have remembered their name long enough to get their cd, which I *love* with the white hot intensity of 1000 suns (lets not mention where I got that term from, shall we?) I've been listening solely to Antics in my car since January (I got the cd for christmas). I also got the Joshua Tree this christmas (ah, classic U2), but I haven't even listened to it yet, because of the previously mentioned Interpol love. So, yeah. Thanks. I need to hug someone. Too... much... love!
and: i feel you on the music issue. i've listened to the shins - chutes too narrow pretty much non-stop for the past year, and only in the car, running errands. were it not for jamie's continued efforts to find and expose us to new music, i'd default to our reserve of "all indie rock produced between 1990-2002" and never emerge.
And I have a similar experience with music, that I tend to listen to a few things over and over for a while until they are a sort of backdrop to my life for a certain period of time. That post, a while back, that you titled "You be well for me" after the PJ song hit so close to home because it was practically the themesong to my writing project.
We can only hope to make the most of love, wherever we find it.
And I mean that with no facetiousness whatsoever.

Heather, that was a beautiful post. Your father must be very proud of you, despite his feelings about your website and your falling away from the Church. Through your words, whether they be humorous, sad, ironic, or witty, you always convey an overwhelming sense of intelligence and standards. We might not always do exactly as our parents did, but we always carry with us the lessons and standards they taught us. For years I tried to live as my parents would see fit, and finally I came to the realization that that wasn't really making anyone happy. I am sure your father looks at you and really sees more of himself in you than your physical attributes. One of these days he will come around, because the love you have for your father is something so many people wish they had. Kudos on a wonderful entry today. Thank you for sharing such personal thoughts.
Thanks for the candy heart, I appreciate it. Actually, Susie, there is always hope.
Briefly, adopted Dad turned out to be just the person everyone said he was. He chose not to have a relationship with my sister and I, and I know that won't change. I know now that it is nothing I ever did or didn't do. There is a sense of peace in that.
With the Dad I don't know, Bio-Dad, there's still hope. He's out there somewhere. I'll find him and talk to him someday. I doubt I'll ever have a relationship with him, but closure would be nice.
I apologize for getting all maudlin, fellow Doocelings... sometimes the Daddy/Daughter emotions lay dormant for a long time, then pounce on me when I least expect it.
I'm off in search of medicinal chocolate now... chocolate cures all, you know...
Thanks, CK. I appreciate that it's not used! Though I have been known, in a pinch...
I think maybe your question is unanswerable. Kind of like my question of whether it's better/easier to lose a parent quickly and unexpectedly, or slow and knowing what's coming. I don't think there's an answer to that one either.
Katie-B-Bored: Very well put indeed. I should have just waited for your post and replied with "Ditto".

I loved your post to your Dad, Dooce. I wish I had your way with words and could have expressed myself to my father as eloquently.
Mrs. Striz - I hope you're feeling much better very soon. Being sick is no fun. Is there someone there to take care of you, or do you still have to take care of the little'uns while you're sick?

I know this comes about 20 years too late, but I'm sorry to hear about Jon's father. They found a brain tumor in my uncle a few weeks ago, and while they were able to remove 95% of it, he has what they call a Grade Four Astrocytoma brain tumor, and chances are he won't live to see the end of the year. Right now he's just hoping he makes it to my counsin's high school graduation. I can't even imagine how she must feel, although she's always been a tough little cookie.
One of the chemo drugs they're using on him is experimental at best, and hasn't been approved by the FDA. We will see, though.
For Valentine's Day, he and my aunt are getting remarried. They said it was something they should have done a long time ago, as they have been divorced but living together for a few years, now. I hope it makes them both as happy as they can be, at present.
Happy V-Day to everyone here, as well. I hope you all ate a crapload of chocolate.
On Valentine's Day, a day traditionally devoted to the expression of romantic love, your daughter chose to post a touching examination of the complicated love shared by a father and daughter.
Mr. H, you may not agree with all the choices Heather has made in life -- and what father does? -- but you just can't argue with the fact that she caused spontaneous crying among a bunch of black-hearted, cynical strangers who usually come to this site looking for stories about poop and steak sauce sodomy. Made us *cry* for cryin' out loud!
Heather bravely shares the joys and sorrows of her life with us, the Internet at Large. Because of her, many of us who would never have known each other are now friends. I can speak for myself, and likely many others, when I say that I might have missed out on the joy that is bloggin' your heart out, had I not found inspiration here at dooce.com, the kind of inspiration that hits one right between the eyes and says "See? People DO think poop is funny!"
Your daughter has a gift, the gift to move people to laughter and tears in the same post, the talent to let us know the exact spot where her heart is being touched on any given day, and the good grace to endure the slings and arrows of outrageous trolls and other Internet villains.
All in all, Mr. H, you've done a fine job of parenting your little girl, who has now certainly grown into a woman of strong character and sparkling wit.
Go on, puff out your chest in pride and strut a little. You deserve it. :)
Respectfully,
The Internet

I do however find joy every day from your website, and for that I thank you.
Heather,

But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."
Laura, I've been where you are now, and still have moments where I'm really ticked about the choices THEY made. They will never know their grandkids. The one time Adopted Dad told me I had cute kids, I agreed with him in a "Yes, too bad you won't know them either" kind of way.
Finding him and talking to him face to face helped me quite a bit, even though he lied to me, to my face, about things. It still helped, though. Deep cleansing breath, indeed.
My sister (his only biological child) is still VERY ticked at him and all he's put my Mom through over the years. Adopted Dad paid child support sporadically, as well, and still owes quite a bit of money to my Mom.
There is no question that someone who can cause that kind of emotional damage has no place in my life... it still makes me wish things could have been very different, though.
My dad died two years ago last Friday. It's never too late to call. If you don't feel like you can explain it all, just tell him you love him, and that you see him in the mirror, and save the rest for another day. *hug*
CK..if it weren't for me hangin' with you and this crew I'd be having a pointless day. I feel like I'm taking up air and space in this office and occupying a perfectly good computer for no reason. I'm taking in your post one at a time and pausing each time. Still a difficult subject for me the whole parents thing. You're really really expressing yourself today and I like it alot :D

My mom got me one that is more like a gigantic backpack than anything else. Now, I don't have laundry facilities within my home, so the Schlep Factor is higher on my list than it may be for some. Wearing it into the laundromat is SO easy!
It really is the best.
You can hang it on the back of your bathroom door. It has its own indicator for when it's time to do the laundry built in: you can no longer open the door enough to get in the bathroom!
I'll hop on board and give a shout out to bucky as well. you rock my world..
just read jon's article posted by ladybug. I'm no stranger to emotional distance. Tough thing to overcome. I'd be lost without my wife. She is SO getting a kick ass dinner tonight. thank god I dry cleaned my suits.
meantime, this is such a boring day at work I think I'm going to build a little fort around my desk.

Watch out!

I know how you feel when talking about your dad and his feeling that he's done something wrong.
Growing up LDS and living less than a block from the church it always feels like your under the microscope.
Especially if you come from a long line of mormons and have forefathers that were general authorities.
When I came out to my folks the first thing they asked was what THEY did wrong. My mom cried for days.
I learned that day that no matter what you do in life your parents will always love you.
Now that's something to hold on to. ;o)

I did want to thank you for turning me on to Interpol. I've been listening solely to Antics in my car since January (I got the cd for christmas). I also got the Joshua Tree this christmas (ah, classic U2), but I haven't even listened to it yet, because of the previously mentioned Interpol love. So, yeah. Thanks. I need to hug someone. Dooce, thanks for your post.

Susie,
Thanks for the candy heart, I appreciate it.

The daddy-daughter thing is so complex. My dad died years ago; we did the best we could to repair the (serious) cracks in the relationship before that happened. I'm thankful to have had that opportunity.
Everyone knows how tough that relationship is, that's probably why "Daughters" was song of the year. I heard JM say he wrote it after a relationship in which a girl was so screwed up from the dad-daughter thing that she was unable to trust him (JM), etc.
Does anyone REALLY like those candy hearts? I mean we like to read them, but do we really like to eat them? I made these Cocoa Krispies treats shaped into giant Hershey's kiss shapes, wrapped in foil with our own little V-Day message on the slip of paper sticking out the top . . . OFF TOPIC: This weekend, my husband and I were playing a Trivia game on one of those tabletop games at a bar. Question was: Utah has the lowest per person consumption of alchol, but the highest consumption of: the answer: Anti-depressants !! FTT.
Love ya, Dooce, keep up the good writing.

The first time I heard that U2 song was on their recent Saturday Night Live performance (the second song, after Vertigo)... i just sat there silent and listened. We bought the CD the day is was released and I haven't done that in YEARS. Number 3 and 10 are my favorites.

Heather,
I love that U2 song and I too have been screaming it while in the car. The sad thing is that I cry about this dumb ex that I have been thinking about alot lately. And now it's Valentine's Day...

Thanks, Closet Metro. See, we do like to read them. And send them into school with our third-graders. Aaaagh! I'll have nightmares about that scenario tonight!

In case your Kleenexes aren't totally full of snot and tears yet, here's another U2 factoid from last night. When they won their grammy and Larry mentioned that they may not be able to tour this year, it's because Edge's daughter was recently diagnosed w/ leukemia. (Oh, and 'Original of the Species' was written about her).
Happy Valentine's Day, guys!
I loved your post to your Dad, Dooce. I wish I had your way with words and could have expressed myself to my father as eloquently.

Dear Heather's Dad:

203. Circus Kelli said:
Dang cold -- Heh, I used to hate that song and dwell on it in the same breath.

Dooce - thanks for the tears on the daddy article. My father and I have never been really close; I wish it weren't that way.
A Disney moment to share with all of you -- Clay on Playhouse Disney was just encouraging the viewing audience to say "Hoo Ha" over and over again, saying that it was fun to say "Hoo Ha." (The otters are sailing on Lake Hoo Ha today.)
Isn't a Hoo Ha a vagina? I thought Disney was all about the good clean fun. Otters sailing on Lake Hoo Ha? What's up with that?

I respect you just as much for what you reserve from public view. Which is why I feel like a terrible person. Because you know now that I've just been buttering you up before my loathesome and purient request.

Bucky, that was so amazing. You put into words what all of us are feeling. We all come to this site every day, not because we are weird (okay, we are a little weird), but because we can relate to Heather. Whether it be about interesting uses for steak sauce and Kotex Light Days, how to wean your baby from the dreaded binky, or interesting ways to torture your dog (i.e. wrapping pasta around his snout), we ALWAYS get a good laugh and relate to what she says. This is a very special gift that Heather has, and I know most dads would be very proud (whether or not they admitted to it). All I can say is "Thank You" to Heather, and I hope one day her dad can say the same thing!

Regarding the best laundry 'basket' EVER...
