Oh mon, mon, mon, mon, you are

Leta has recently figured out how to operate the DVD remote and because of this we are now forced to watch a certain Sesame Street DVD over and over again. Never mind that we have seven different episodes stored on the TiVo including the one featuring a skit where two Weimaraners are dressed up as old women and are making peanut butter from scratch with their human hands. She couldn't care less about that episode, pity her bad taste. My one hope in life is that when we all die and go to heaven a Weimaraner dressed up as an old woman will greet us at the gates.

Also, since we're on the topic of Weimaraners, here's a reminder of why the Daily Oliver is the best website on the Internet.

The Sesame Street DVD is filled with all sorts of children's songs like I've Been Working on the Railroad and She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain and that insufferable Jacob Jingleheimer song which I'm certain is being played right now at an unbearable volume in some prison to torture a terrorist suspect. Dude is probably wishing they had instead just cut off his arms and forced him to eat his own fingers.

Leta now knows all these songs and sings them line for line, a remarkable feat considering she had never heard any of them before this DVD. Last night as we were getting her ready for bed she broke into a violently off-key version of Row Row Row Your Boat, and I realized that she had learned it solely from watching television, that it required no input from me as a parent. People, this is an example of everything that is right with America.

Last night we also got out the video camera because she was singing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star with so much gusto it could have been the national anthem. She may not have all the words right, or any of them for that matter, and in this clip she doesn't even start in the right place, but this video shows that the television is doing a pretty good job of raising my kid.

I always liked the Electric Company better. hmph.

Oh, God. The John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt song. That was a memory I didn't need to recover. My brother used to sing that OVERandOVERandOVERandOVER just to torture me. I freaking hate that song to this day.

It must run in my family, because my father loved to torture us with this old gem:
"Pete and Repeat are out fishing in a boat. Pete falls over the side. Who's left in the boat?"
    "Repeat."
"Pete and Repeat are out fishing in a boat. Pete falls over the side..."

Thanks, Heather. The rest of the day I am going to be singing "Johhhn, Jaaaycob JingleHEIMER SCHMIDT! His name is my name tooooo..." in my head. :(

Small Angel get alot of her pre-state-standardized education from the TV too. In fact, she has this tendancy to act out scenes she seen during the day, usually after she gets put to bed. Thank goodness for commercial free kids' TV, because one thing she has not been indoctrinated with is the urge to demand every single toy on the shelf when we go to the store. Ah, bliss.

You made me feel better about my capitulation to the evil DVD player. But it's Dumbo I'm worried about. Will the pink elephants scene make her want to drink at an early age? And when the alcohol doesn't bring on hallucinations that cool will she then switch to hallucinagens?

For anyone worried about the psyche of these dogs, rest assured weimaraners apparently LOVE the attention. Wegman has said in numerous interviews that he never really had an intension of using his family dogs as props, but he has learned that as "working" dogs lounging around his studio, they really were much happier with a "job" to do.

As for television as a babysitter: I wonder how much time the average toddler REALLY spends in front of the tube? I think people subtract whole hours when surveyed. I know it's the one thing that makes me feel like an absolute failure as a parent. According to the averages reported, my kid is an off-the-charts TV zombie.

William's first song was Moby's "South Side". And he could sing a ton of Barenaked Ladies song and certain Ani Difranco songs that he deemed not too girly before he knew the words of any of the "standard" kids songs. *Sigh* Good times. Of course, he complains now (at 7 yrs old) that music "isn't what he wants it to be" so he won't listen to much lately.
Connor isn't singing yet, but he dances to everything- and I mean EVERYTHING!

As for kids and DVDs, my 2 year old now knows how to get into the DVD cabinet. Every disk is taken out of every case and in some sadistic maneuver, they are all put back into the wrong cases to the point where they will NEVER BE RIGHT AGAIN. Oh, she's so cute. What a joy - and thank you for sharing!

OT - when I saw the yellow 'Buried Gas Line' flag I remembered something about my sewer line replacement years ago. My daughter was engaged, I was trying to figure out how to pay for the wedding, etc. (they eloped - their choice, such sweeties), and my sewer line had to be dug up. In the line of digging was a magnificent yellow rose bush. Luckily it was winter, I hacked it down to 12 inches all around, they dug it up and I left it on the mound of (v. smelly) earth until they covered up the new earth. This poor bedraggled rose was still hanging out, and I thought 'Hey - roses have a bare root season' and stuck it back in the ground. It thrived - though not as much as before when it was sitting over a sewer leak. Anyhow, that's my funny sewer story.

They put extra juice in kids this age that's an addicting intoxicant to parents, thus ensuring survival of the species. What I wouldn't give to have one more day with my kids when they were full of obvious charm and sweetness. I'd change sleepers filled to the neck with yellow poo, clean up projectile vomiting three or four times, and dine eagerly on pre-moistened Cheez-Its and cold tomato soup, just for a day.

Kids develop ever more complicated charm with time, but that juiciness is peculiar to this age. Yum.

It was the Christmas video of my son when he was 3 that got me to melting on the couch. It had snowed that year, which doesn't happen much in Texas. We ran out and made miniature snowmen with what little snow was on the ground. My son's little voice saying "kno man" is something I had totally forgotten. I wish now I had captured more of my baby's "little voice". Makes me wonder....what else have I forgotten?

Now when he begs me not to embarrass him in front of his friends and I fall apart realizing my son is beginning to turn into a teenage Martian, I just go and pop this video in and pretend everything is right with the world.

My favorite is the recent controversy regarding the Sesame Street Beginnings videos. Of course, I couldn't RESIST, I didn't want to leave my baby boy out of that sweet controversy, so I bought the Making Music one. I will be posting later this week about it, but in short, I was actually impressed. The video is downright boring UNLESS you get involved with it by holding your baby, dancing and singing along. Frankly, I haven't really had that impulse for dancing and singing while watching Baby Einstein.

Performances like make for questions like "what plumbing problem?" Too cute.

Having missed the comments for the worst week entry, may I submit mine?
    1. We have guests in town for my daughter's 3rd birthday. The AC goes into death throes. (Saturday)
    2. Daughter vomits on Mommy (me). In a startling display of self control, Mommy does not throw child from lap and run to the shower. (Sunday)
    3. Mommy gets the same stomach virus. (Monday)
    4. AC being replaced, so even minimal functioning is gone for 8 hours. It's August. In Georgia. (Tuesday)
    5. Husband spends day in bathroom or bed. (Tuesday)
    6. Many loads of laundry are done, along with many flushings of commode and showers. (Sunday through Tuesday)
    7. Waste water, from toilets and laundry, discovered on basement floor. Water is a minimum of one inch deep, but cardboard boxes have wicked it up. (Tuesday pm)
    8. Guests flee for somewhere with indoor plumbing. Mommy and daughter spend night at sister's home. She has no kids and has the least-babyproofed home in the world. Scissors! Sharpies! Dangling cords with small hot electrics at the end! (Wednesday)
    9. Plumber and county water people collaborate to rip up lawn, and destroy my favorite bush. (Thursday)
    10. Mother and daughter check into hotel, still suffering from stomach virus. (Thursday)
    11. Father spends days cleaning basement, evenings at hotel. (Friday) Manages to remove the worst of it & throw away the bottom layer of boxes. Mother joins for project on Saturday.
    12. Finishing basement project now underway, once plumbing issue resolved. Current time overrun: 2 years. July 26, 2006, my daughter will turn 6.
    13. Did I mention I was 3 months pregnant at the time? My son hasn't seen the living room without all of the boxes of stuff from the basement (salvageable stuff in new boxes).

You approach your life with wit, irony and snarky humor, which, probably due to the inherent expression of sentience and insight those qualities require, makes the deep affection for your little family seem all the more heartfelt to me. It is so clear how much you love them both. I'm amazed when some of your readers don't see that.

Well I think that you need to know two things, 1. My 16 year old son had to come in from the other room when he heard Leta singing and then told me that she is adorable. Which is bad because I have tried to expose him to rotten little kids as a form of birth control and when he sees one being cute that puts me one day closer to being a grandmother.

And two, my girlfriend might be running to go get sterilized right now because she is worried that she will become somehow magically pregnant from me ooohhing and ahhing over babies like this.

Hi Heather, Couple of questions for you. Why do you only keep the comments that kiss your butt and delete the ones that ask you to be real for a moment? Why don't you write about something besides this superficial plumbing day-to-day crap? People want to know what's under the surface. What happened with Leta's walking problem? How's your anorexia and depression? Nobody cares about cookies and plumbing. Stop trying so hard to be funny and just be genuine.

I think Leta is really sweet and you're a great mom.
Tina probably has a thing or two to learn about self-respect. Looks like she has some serious issues that goes beyond this blog and I don't really think expressing hate on other people's blog is going to solve any of her problems.

Heather talks about overcoming depression on today's Momversation.

  • Leta: "STOP FOLLOWING ME, COCO!" I wonder where she picked up that exclamation.
  • Me: "Hey Marlo, here's a vibrantly colored, squeaky toy made specifically for your age group!" Marlo: "Got any knives?"
  • @makeandtakes my pleasure! Had a great time with you guys!
