Baby, it's cold outside

This weekend we finally carved out several hours to set up Christmas decorations, and I am not at all exaggerating when I refer to that time in hours. I don't know why I thought it would be a good idea to buy 25 boxes of round ornaments, or why I thought the tree would have enough branches to hold that many, but we hadn't been hanging ornaments for thirty minutes before Leta announced she was bored. There were still 17 or 18 boxes of ornaments waiting patiently for a place on the tree, 17 or 18 boxes that I did not have the heart to send back up into that freezing attic space, and I suddenly remembered having this exact conversation with my own mother. I always got tired of helping her hang ornaments and would wander off to play with a box of Barbies, leaving her to do the bulk of the work. And since my mother was too generous to say what she was thinking, I went ahead told Leta what my mother should have said to me all those years: SUCK IT, KID.

You're welcome, Mom.

We'd been watching episode after episode of Spongebob all morning, and as Jon twisted a section of the artificial tree into place (he's allergic to real ones) he suggested I turn on some festive holiday music. And as I walked back to my computer to sift through our music collection I realized we don't have much to choose from. In fact, in the years that Jon and I have been together we've purchased only one album of Christmas music, A Charlie Brown Christmas, which has to be the most depressing Christmas music of all time. If you weren't on Prozac before you listened to that album, you'll be begging your therapist for a prescription by song two. That little bald kid cannot catch a break, and the whole album sounds like someone just beat him up and stole his lunch money. If the album were a Christmas card it would say, "I wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas despite my raging insecurities and social awkwardness." Basically, a sentence out of my diary in college.

After doing a quick search on iTunes, I realized I had no idea what I was looking for. Because whatever we play during this season is going to form lasting memories for Leta. I can appreciate the classics by Nat King Cole and Dean Martin, but my most fond memories of Christmas are always to the soundtrack of a kooky Osmond Family holiday album, or Alvin and the Chipmunks. I want to find something as equally nutty because, come on. THIS HOLIDAY IS NUTTY. Think about it. We're telling our four and five-year-olds that a fat man breaks into the house by sliding down the chimney. AND WE DON'T SHOOT HIM. We're asking them to believe that deer can fly. Seriously. This is not much different than telling them that once a year millions of people across the world strip naked and hop into a bathtub full of mustard. Why? Because Christ was born!

Noel!

The one album I did find that looked interesting is called Merry Mixmas, basically all the holiday classics remixed by DJ's in a thoroughly modern way. It's fantastic, very catchy, and I downloaded the entire album from iTunes within minutes. But nutty it is not.

So I'm looking for suggestions, even though the answer may be to stick with The Chipmunks. Do you know of a Christmas album we should not live without?

I agree that Run DMC's Christmas in Hollis is a great one! We also love Dominic the Donkey by Lou Monte, but that may only be because we are Italians, and our neighbors have a donkey.

You gotta hear Gary, The Green Nosed Reindeer by MC Lars on the album A Winter's Night (I think that's the name). Gary is Rudolph's half-brother and he saves Christmas by foiling Osama Bin Laden's plan to kidnap Rudolph and cause 911 Part 2. It's got a catchy tune that will stick in your head.

Target has a Disney's Princess Holiday CD ... we also like the soundtrack to the movie The Polar Express. When we decorate, we usually have the tv on with the movie "A Christmas Story", our favorite holiday movie. I also remember the Muppets Christmas and country christmas music from the radio when I was growing up.

Huh, I never thought the Charlie Brown music was depressing. The television special with the poor little sagging tree--that was depressing--but the music is just so...laid back.

With that in mind, I would suggest John Denver with the Muppets (I think it's "A Christmas Together") for Christmas cheer without Chipmunks frenzy. However, since you appear to be looking for exactly that (the frenzy), I second the Dr. Demento recommendation. Or Weird Al. Or Tom Lehrer. Or all three.

We always listened to Dvorak's Slavonic Dances for four-hand piano; I have no idea what that has to do with Christmas, but it always gave my sister and I something to dance to in high Christmas morning spirits.

I don't have time to read the 1200+ comments before me to see if someone already made this suggestion, but JOHN FAHEY Christmas. It's on iTunes, I bought it last year. It is acoustic guitar, instrumental, and it is hauntingly beautiful. We always played it when I was little, after my parents pried the Alvin & the Chipmunks album out of my little hands. That is a favorite too.

Dude! It totally pains me that you have never heard of OI! TO THE WORLD by The Vandals. It's a genuine, no-posers Punk Rock Christmas album! The title track was covered by No Doubt, and is quite simply the best Christmas song ever written by human hand (for the Vandals version you'll need a lyric sheet, though - their lead singer is kind of a mushmouth). And the classic "It's Christmastime for My Penis" needs to be heard by Leta quickly, before it's too late!

Hands down, my favorite holiday CD is Bare Naked for the Holidays by the Bare Naked Ladies. Has lots of zesty, quirky energy, while still being kinda sweet and tender. Jingle Bells is a particular favorite - -they play with the tempo dramatically, and we had a fun holiday one year running around our kitchen with little nieces and nephews to that one, playing a kind of musical chairs with the song every time the tempo changed.

Also love a Jazzy Wonderland, which is a nice and fun compilation of contemporary Jazz . . .

I also have a bunch of compilation CDs of standards, which fill the niches for those oldies but goodies we grew up associating with the holiday prep. . .

Try the Bayou Brothers "Let it Snow Zydeco". Zydeco is by definition, nutty. It's fun for dogs and little dancers to dance to (and big dancers to drink, er, dance to), energizes the putting-up-of-decorations process, and isn't anything like the MTC, while still being effing festive.

Heather, you darling girl, I've just discovered your blog and have been reading it obsessively starting with your first archived posts. So far, you've influenced me to lighten up, take my meds, and admit that there are as many events in my life to charm as there are to annoy. On balance, anyway. Over, say, a week or so. Thank you. I miss XM Satellite Radio's holiday channel "Special X-Mas," which was filled with obscure songs sung by folks so tone deaf it's hard to believe the sound engineer didn't die laughing.

Since they chose not to air it this year, I've been filling that void with Slacker.com's "Dysfuntional Holiday Radio" station. Here's a little sample of what they've been playing:
    - Santa Came on a Nuclear Missile
    - Give the Jew Girl Toys
    - Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'

For something a little more...ummm...politically correct, yet not mainstream, try Slacker's "Holiday Party" or "Jazz Holiday."

I'm not sure what kind of message you want to send to Leta around the holidays. Wait, yes I do. THIS SHOULD BE PERFECT!

    Some of his classics include:

Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer
Grandma's Spending Christmas With The Superstars
Christmas Won't Be The Same Without Johnny
    Grandma's Killer Fruitcake
    Santa Ain't Comin'
    Christmas Millionaire
Grandpa's Gonna Sue The Pants Off Of Santa
    Junk Bond Christmas Blues
Send Me A Wife For Christmas
    Here's To The Lonely
Don't Make Me Play That Grandma Song Again
Goin On a Date With Santa
    Hot Christmas
    Uncle Johnny's Glass Eye
    Texas Chainsaw Christmas
    Feels Like Christmas
    Reindeer Rap
    Big Jolly Man
    Christmas On An Island
    Jingle Bells
    Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring

Boney M. It's not Christmas without bubble pop synth reggae. At least, not for me. No one else's version of "Mary's Boy Child" sounds right.

Barenaked for the Holidays. With an added bonus of Hannukkah songs, and a hilarious version of Deck the Halls wherein all of the words have been replaced with "Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young."

Transiberian Orchestra. Yeah, it gets a little overplayed on the radio now, but it's just cuz it's so darned unique!

OK I know I'm comment number 7 million and whatever, but I have the BEST suggestion..

"Switched on Christmas" a disco xmas album from the 1971 (sounds like it was made exclusively on a Casio keyboard). It has the tackiest versions of all of the classics. One has a "woop woop" refrain but I can't for the life of me remember which one it is.

You can listen to the tracks on YouTube. I recommend coming in at about 1 min 30 on a couple of them just to get the full effect...

My most vivid memory of Christmas music was in elementary school when our music teacher made us sing along to "Happy Birthday Baby Jesus!" My sister and I have been singing it ever since. Last year I found the album in mp3 format online at http://madphilosopher.ca/2004/12/sunshine-and-snowflakes/
Check it out. It's definitely nutty. My other fav is John Denver and the Muppets Christmas: A Christmas Together. It's got some hokey ones (in true John Denver style) but I love the take Miss Piggy and co. have on some of our traditional Christmas tunes.

Not necessarily "kooky", but certainly different....you need to have some Barbershop Christmas music in your collection. Some great A Cappella music that you can sing along with if you like.

    My recommendations:

Some Children See Him - The Gas House Gang (MUST HAVE)

    Cool Yule - Acoustix

Anything from The Vocal Majority or The Ambassadors of Harmony.

A lot of people have mentioned Barenaked Ladies' album Barenaked for the Holidays, and if you're like most people I know and cringe at the very notion of listening to BNL at all, I would still recommend this for nutty Christmas music. Just a for instance: there's a hidden chorus of "Happy Birthday," just for Jesus. They try to put a spin on all the stuff you might be tired of and not in ways you might expect. So even if the idea of BNL gives you brain herpes, at least sample it online a little bit.

Also, the soundtrack to the movie "Mixed Nuts" has some good nuttiness on it. A "Jingle Bells" track that sounds like Animal arranged it, for one.

They've also been playing this on a local radio station and it cracked me up the first time: http://youtube.com/watch?v=2Fe11OlMiz8. And then I downloaded it and emailed it to everyone I know, so, now you.

But that's because he's evil and apparently wants people to hate us.

I'm a little more classic in my tastes, as my favorite Christmas albums of all time are "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby, because it's what my mom always listened to, and "Elvis Christmas", because when Elvis sings "Merry Christmas Baby" it makes my toes curl.

Quirky/oddball - Lou Monte's Dominic the Donkey. Kids love it (who doesn't love making donkey noises?) and it is totally ridiculous.

Beautiful - Christmas albums by Linda Eder (especially "Vienna," which is not a traditional Christmas song, but is incredibly lovely), Loreena McKennitt's "A Winter Garden" and Vanessa Williams (yes, from Ugly Betty, but she has a gorgeous voice - remember when she was Miss America before her naked pictures came out? - the album is "Star Bright").

Fun - Barenaked Ladies (especially their collaboration with Sarah McLachlan), River by Robert Downey Jr. (on the Ally McBeal Christmas album, strangely enough), the Elf soundtrack and the Love Actually soundtrack

Aw, the Charlie Brown Christmas album is my favorite! So take my other suggestions with a grain of salt. :D

I love anything with Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, etc. Williams Sonoma's new Christmas CD has most of those guys, and who doesn't want an excuse to shop at WS? They're also taking donations for St. Jude this year which is kind of cool.

Then there's Stephen Colbert's "A Colbert Christmas." From here on out, it simply is not Christmas at my house without that album. :D

I basically buy all Christmas CDs when I see them on sale. Kohl's usually sells one every year as part of their Kohl's Cares for Kids program, and they're usually pretty good. They're also only $5 and it goes to charity. Win-win situation.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season, Heather!

P.S. I'm cracking up over here because my code words to post my comment are "breed tobacco." :D

I found an amusing Christmas duet between Cyndi Lauper and the Hives on this Swedepop mp3 blog: http://www.swedesplease.net/category/christmas/ There are quite a few other good songs on there too.

Also, if you like childish cheesiness there is a song called Please Don't Send Me Fruitcake by the Von Trapp Children that I am rather fond of. The infants sound possessed but that is all part of its charm. I admit that a few people I've played it to have said it's the worst Christmas song ever but it is so amazingly good at being bad that it is something close to genius.

Not sure if it's already been said because I won't read that many comments, but

    The Roches- We Three Kings

All time best Christmas album. Hands down. This from a person who owns more Christmas albums than every other kind of music combined. There are some stunning musical arrangements and some really fun kid-friendly numbers.

I also love Emmylou Harris' Light in the Stable (but it's a little too country for some people) and of course, Kenny and Dolly. Just for nostalgia purposes...it's a classic! But seriously, The Roches.

Let me start with *I hate Christmas music!*

That said there is one christmas album am not only willing to listen to, but i actually look forward to listening to.

And because I am not there to see the look on your face that makes it clear that i am a moron for even suggesting it, I'll tell you what it is...

    Kenny G, Miracles.

I have no idea if you can still find this or not, but when my sister and I were growing up, we listened to a cassette tape of the Cabbage Patch Kids singing Christmas songs. Seriously. That is the soundtrack in my head to childhood christmas memories. You asked for nutty.

Not sure if someone already recommended this because I got bored after 93 comments but, El Vez (the Mexcian Elvis) has a Christmas CD named "Sno-Way Jose" and it's amazing. His other stuff is great too. If you get a chance he puts on a great show. Hope you like him!

I just found your blog and like it a lot. My ex husband used to call the Christmas music I would play "Music to commit suicide by" whenever I played the Bing Crosby and Perry Como Christmas tunes. LOL My suggestion is the Christmas CD that Josh Groban made. I think he has one of the most amazing voices of our time. My other suggestion would be a Christmas CD by Frank Sinatra.

Johnny Mathis' Christmas album is absolutely classic.
John Denver and the Muppets Christmas album is also fantastic.
And, seriously, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's version of Messiah (recorded in 1954 or something) is the best there is. And that's coming from an atheist...

My best Xmas memories are listening to the StarWars Christmas album. The A-side had songs like "R2D2 We Wish You A Merry Xmas" and "What do you get a wookie for Christmas when he already owns a comb..." The B side was C3PO reading "Twas the Night before Christmas". I suppose I should not be so shocked that I married a sci-fi geek.

If you even read this far down the posts...Lord knows I wouldn't...but my favorite Christmas album is "Maybe This Christmas."

It just has classic Christmas music, sung by my favorite musicians.

    Check out the play list...

    1. Winter Wonderland - Phantom Planet
    2. Maybe This Christmas - Ron Sexsmith
    3. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Coldplay
    4. Green Sleeves - Vanessa Carlton
    5. Blue Christmas - Bright Eyes
    6. Happy Christmas (War Is Over) - Sense Field
    7. 12/23/95 - Jimmy Eat World
    8. Rudolph - Jack Johnson
    9. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - Barenaked Ladies with Sarah McLachlan
    10. Bizarre Christmas Incident - Ben Folds
    11. What a Year for a New Year - Dan Wilson
    12. Sweet Secret - Neil Finn
    13. Snow - Loreena McKennitt

PS. There is also a "Maybe This Christmas Too" and "Maybe This Christmas Tree" which I think is VERY clever. :)

    Enjoy.

The Bobs have an xmas album that is nutty. Songs like 50-Kilowatt Tree ("there's a star in the east, but it's only me and my 50-killowatt tree") and Christmas in Jail (no lyrics needed for that one, really) make for...interesting...looks from elderly relatives. Also has Mabo Santa Mambo and Rasta Reindeer, plus a couple of just nice songs.

For non-nutty, but amazing acapella harmonies, The Coats (formerly The Trenchcoats, until incompetent media people incorrectly linked them to the Columbine HS shooting) have a lovely xmas album. Which also includes the Grinch song. Those are my two favorite holiday albums.

As I was reading I thought I'd recommend the Merry Mixmas album, I've heard many songs from it on Yahoo LaunchCast's Holiday Lounge station - only to finish your post and discover that won't be necessary.

Another Christmas album I like is the "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" Soundtrack. It has a lot off fun songs on it including "Christmas is Going to the Dogs" by Eels. I'm sure Chuck and Coco will love it! ;0)

If I don't comment again in the next 16 days, have a wonderful Christmas! Love the your site. Keep it up.

You probably have enough music suggestions by now so I am just going to tell you how lucky you are that your daughter gives up on decorating the tree. My kids want to do the whole thing, which drives me nuts (I'm a little control freakish when it comes to Xmas decorations). And then I have to spend the whole night redoing it when they've gone to bed.

So, count your blessings I say! :)

    Okay Armstrongs,

I admit it: I only scanned the first 300 entries, but since no one seems to have mentioned it yet and you asked for "nutty" I gotta say:

    Elvis's Christmas Album

Plus, he's from a generation Grandma and Grandpa can appreciate, too.

The best song is the strip-club-sounding "Santa Claus is Back in Town."

    Got no sleigh with reindeer
    No sack on my back
    You're gonna see me comin'
    In a big, black Cadillac

Listen to that one without laughing.

    Raul Malo "Marshmellow World"
    "Elf" Soundtrack
    Michael Buble "Let it Snow"
