My heart's beating like a rabbit

A little over a month ago some good people from Nintendo came to my house and threw a Wii Fit party. My job was to gather up ten of my friends and prepare them to be humiliated by their Wii Fit age, something determined by your BMI/weight, your age, and some balancing acts that would cause a veteran circus performer to fall over. I don't think it helped that almost everyone had consumed at least two glasses of wine before attempting to balance themselves on one foot, or that some of them like myself would have a hard time balancing on one foot when completely sober. On average, everyone's Wii Fit age was about 10 years older than their actual age. Except for a certain 24-year-old who has yet to be beaten down by life, so of course, she aced the balancing tests. This is one of the problems with the Wii Fit, that it doesn't allow you to input all the years of therapy you've been through, the sleepless nights, the hours and weeks and months spent worrying about your kids, that one Thanksgiving dinner with your in-laws, how you almost filed for bankruptcy, or the countless times your boss belittled you in front of the entire company. Because if you take all that into account then MY GOD, IT'S A MIRACLE YOU'RE STILL STANDING. In those instances the Wii Fit should hand you a cigarette.

My Wii Fit age was 35 (I'll be 33 next month), which isn't too bad, but it's something I'm definitely going to work on as part of the overall changes I'd like to see in my life. The reason I'm even writing about this is because Nintendo has agreed to give me five Wii and Wii Fit systems (as a set) to give away to five of my readers.

I get approached to do things like this all the time, but this is the first time I've done a give away because this is a product I use, something in my house, something I'd love to share with you. Nintendo is not paying me to do this, and just to clear up some confusion, I would never accept money to post about anything here. That's not how this website works. Everything you see in my style section is something I have bought with my own money or is a gift sent to me from one of my readers, a gift I would have gone out and bought had I known about it beforehand, something that fits right in with my aesthetic. I work very hard to make sure that you can trust that what I say here is in no way influenced by advertisers or corporations who are trying to reach a bunch of eyeballs. Your eyeballs deserve as much.

The give away is going to work like this: I'm going to leave comments open on this post until Wednesday July 2nd at 5:00 PM Mountain Daylight Time. You are free to leave a comment as many times as you want, preferably a comment about the Wii Fit and what you think it might do for you or your family, and then on Wednesday night after I close comments I'm going to call The Avon World Sales Leader (my mother, for those who are just joining us), tell her how many comments there are, and then ask her to list off five random numbers between one and that number. She will not have read the comments, so the only thing she will be influenced by is The Spirit. And maybe the vodka she had in her orange juice that morning. HA HA! Just kidding. My mom doesn't drink orange juice.

By commenting on this post you agree to the terms and rules of this give-away (read here) and, should you be selected as a winner, consent to letting me use your name when I announce the winners. Anonymous comments and comments without a valid email address will be disqualified.

Winners will be announced Thursday morning. Ready, set, go!

I am 10 months pregnant and living in New England which is has been the capital of Humidity for over 2 weeks. I have swollen feet, fingers and legs, and to top everything off, I woke up with swollen face and bad hair today. Please pick me, b/c this unborn baby is giving me hearburn and I am fantasizing about the day I will be able to take a deep breath again.
I love the Wii and when not pregnant, I RULE in boxing and suck in DDR. I am counting on the Wii Fit to help me avoid the reality of a crying newborn!

Man, your mom is going to have to come up with some crazy high numbers!

Anyway, the Wii fit would allow me to exercise without having to go outside in 90 degree temperatures and smog, which makes me have asthma attacks of doom. Woot.

I would love a Wii Fit! My husband and I have been trying to eat better and be more active since we found out his blood pressure was 165/100 (and he's only 31). He's on medication for it now, but his doctor said that if we eat better and are more active, he could possibly go off the meds at some point. Also, we want to have kids soon and I feel like it's not fair of me to be growing a baby in my body with the way I treat my body. We both love video games and have been trying to buy a Wii since Christmas - it's just that whenever we actually have the money to buy one, they're out of stock everywhere we look!

So come on Avon World Sales Leader - pick my number! :)

"but wait! we can play the wii together!"

and then i can watch in horror as he shakes his hips back and forth to the wii fit. because it's not the togetherness aspect that i'm looking for. it's the horror aspect.

I'm a bit skeptical, as the only thing I have ever won was a large pink t-shirt at a YMCA lock-in in 1993. But as always, optimism beats skepticism.

My crazy family had a Wii until my younger sister got a bit intense during her game of tennis and sent the controller flying into the large television that had been delivered by Santa the day before.

Dad donated the Wii to 'someone less fortunate'.

A Wii Fit might be a nice way for my husband and me to lose the pregnancy weight we've gained together with our second child. It should also entertain my 3 year old son to no end since he enjoys watching Mommy try not to fall on her butt and generally act like she has no control of her limbs. As an added bonus, we may actually be able to enjoy doing something together that doesn't involve a couch or massive amounts of tasty, deadly snack foods.

Well, see... I live 3,000 miles away from my very close-knit family of 11. (Not counting the progeny of my siblings, so the actual number is really somewhere closer to the mid-twenties.) What's that got to do with a Wii, you ask?

My parents (who are both 64, mind you) purchased a Wii last December, and my entire family has not ceased playing it since. And since my siblings all live within 10 minutes of my parents (did I mention that my sister shares the back fence with my parents? No?) this has amounted to CONSIDERABLE HOURS of accumulating Wii skill for the entire family.

    I have no Wii.

So when I go to visit (3-4x a year) I ROUTINELY get schooled by my mother at every game known to man. Dancing with the Stars? Check. Mario Kart? Check. Bowling? Check. Heck, I even lose to my three year old nephew at Bowling.

Please, save me the embarrasment. Let me practice at home.

I find it interesting that there exist video games with the express purpose of getting gamers off their sedentary asses. Of course, just as not everyone can master DDR (raises hand sheepishly), not everyone can properly build up their thumb muscles and lightening-fast reflexes. It looks like Nintendo is trying to split the difference with this Wii Fit.

Will it work? Only time will tell. XD

It's strange that you post this today. I just started a diet today. Not just a diet, but a total overhall of what I put into my body. I've been carrying around extra weight most of my 18 years. It's been really hard on my body and it is a main cause for my Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. I have to take 3 different prescriptions daily, and I would like to not have to put those chemicals in my body anymore. Not telling some kind of sob story, there are so many other worse things to have. I just am ready to change. Your recent posts about your cleanse have been really motivating, thank you. In general, your blog has really kept my spirits up, it is the first feed I check daily.

My fiance and I want to be healthy! Help us get started, Heather!

Hi Heather! I have been a reader for a little over three years. I started reading Dooce fresh out of high school when I was 17. I have been in the US Army for three years now and I am currently in Baghdad, IRAQ in a company of mostly females. We run a medical company that deals with anything from little cuts and sprained ankles, to gunshot wounds and IED attacks. Our company has dwindled down in size quite a bit due to soldiers getting hurt, so we spend 12 hours on, 12 hours off at our clinic. This makes working out hard because we still have to fit SLEEP in our schedules somewhere, but we are still required to be within height/weight standards and physical fitness standards! We have a small break room with a TV in it and we acquired a PS3 with DDR on it that we like to use to work out sometimes, but a Wii and Wii Fit would be SO GREAT. I'm not going to leave comment after comment on here, because that seems silly to me, but I'm just going to leave it up to The Avon World Sales Leader to by chance pick my number!! Thanks for this great opportunity, Heather, and Nintendo! We are praying that we get chosen over here!! :)

My husband started reading your site in '02. He printed out the post-partum-constipation incident including how your husband heroically cleaned out the bathtub. He probably should've deleted Jon's generous act as I've held him to a higher standard since; he's yet to live up to it. I've been reading your blog since.
I'm also a BYU English graduate '99, and I grew up with a girl who dated a guy in the very band your husband played in or managed. For the life of me, I can't remember his name. He's living in Austin now, I think. (brain cells are jumping ship, can't take the overtime that oppressive insomnia demands. And that is exactly what I'd use the Wii for - to put me in some yoga-meditative trance quieting the will-i-sleep anxiety. And by chance if Wii doesn't offer yoga, I'd let my kids play with it ALL DAY and not feel bad about that because they'll be exercising.)Anyway, to escape that paranthetical hole, I enjoy reading your site, and too often wonder if you had Prof. Jorgensen because I can imagine him in your head questioning word choice and 'quick' use of language. You write like your conscientious about those things. Maybe I'm just crazy, but he won't leave mine. And he's shaking in disbelief begging me not to send this mistake ridden response. I want the Wii and don't have time for proper grammar, spelling, word choice. . . It's time for a revolution.

Because I need just one more thing to distract me from cleaning the cat box and the bathroom and the dishes and the laundry and the ironing and the vacuuming and...

    I need a nap.

We would love a Wii with Wii Fit. My best friend already owns one and swears it's more like playing than exercising.

Way to get us lurkers out of the shadows, indeed.

Why do I need a Wii Fit? Two words: baby weight. My ass flattened out, and its previous roundness relocated to my belly. Sound awful? It is. I've learned that when it comes to exercise, you have to give me something I can do within 10 feet of the kidlet. Then it might actually get done.

therefore - Have pity on my post-partum large-assness!

My ass and my husband will thank you.

PS (If you have a Costco nearby, they sell already it already cooked and fresh in a package, it's so delicious!)

Delurking to win a Wii Fit. My 3 year old would have a blast helping Mom and Dad 'stretch.' (What he calls Pilates. He even has the video memorized and will walk around saying, "Squeeze your buttocks.") Anyway, great site. Thanks.

I have been trying to think of something really cool like you would probably say, but hey, I have nothing that cool to say. So, I will just say - we (my family) need the Wii Fit to get back in shape. My class reunion is coming up soon (less than 6 months) and let's just say that I have a lot of work to do...oh, yeah, and the Wii Fit would totally match my living room.

So I am traveling to Afghanistan this summer for work (not in the military, I work for a nonprofit that helps farmers plant trees and restore their agricultural businesses in Afghanistan) and I won't have anyplace to workout all summer. I'm a runner and supposed to be training for a marathon, so not being able to work out (since I OBVIOUSLY can't don my usual hot pink sports bra and short shorts and go jogging around Kabul) is going to kill me this summer. Having the Wii Fit would be PERFECT!

    PLEASE, Heather's mother, CHOOSE ME.

(I have the plane tickets to prove this, if necessary. Seriously.)
